Will this seem fishy?

I posted this in the "Essays" forum but maybe that wasn't the best place for it. Anyway, my friend, who's a year older than me, got into an Ivy last year and currently goes there. We were in quite a lot of pretty prestigious orchestras together, and we both happen to be tone-deaf. Naturally, being tone-deaf posed a pretty significant obstacle to becoming as good at music as I am now, not to say becoming involved in music in the first place, and I'm writing an essay about it for the same school my friend attends. However, my also-tone-deaf friend also wrote an essay on the same topic for the same school. Would this seem suspicious to admissions officers? My friend and I are pretty different outside of music, but we do share passions for science and math and stuff.

Thanks!

Seems awfully coincidental to me. Unless you can give it a completely different spin, I think it might raise some red flags (even though you’re not doing anything wrong). Good luck!

Honestly, I wouldn’t believe it if I got two of them at once, but a year apart might make it a lot better. I don’t think you’ll have any problems since it’s still an interesting story. If you’re really worried, maybe you can refer to your friend so that on the wild chance that the exact same person reads your essay AND remembers the previous essay, they’ll know that they’re not dealing with some kind of creepy scifi thing.
