Will todays tragic event impact Jumbo Days?

The question is directed towards admissions (Dan?). I realize it's a dynamic situation and probably too soon to have a firm answer.

We are leaving from the W Coast in the AM tomorrow and will attend other admitted student days (not in Boston) first, but the main purpose of the trip is to attend Jumbo Days. We would likely cancel the trip if Jumbo Days were to be cancelled (or postponed).

I heard that most of the Tufts marathon and volunteer team has been accounted for, and almost everyone is safe. From what I heard, two Tufts students were injured in the blast, but are not in critical condition.

Not sure if Jumbo Days will be cancelled, but the university seems to be in good shape. Seems that things being cancelled in Boston are actually in Boston, or are cancelled in light of the difficulty of getting around and the need to secure the area.

FYI, JetBlue just emailed saying that they are waiving fees for changes of travel plans. Which airline are you flying?

Flying in on United. We have an admitted students day to attend in NYC on Wed and another on Th in Boston in addition to Jumbo (although my daughter has already decided on Tufts, I thought it prudent to attend other schools events in the area as part of the trip just in case she learns something new). We leave in the AM tomorrow. I’m guessing nothing will change (other than long security lines while we travel), but wouldn’t like to get to the E Coast and find out the reason for our travel had been impacted. My daughter is missing school to attend. She has already visited Tufts and stayed overnight, so it isn’t an absolute must to attend…

My daughter is a freshman and says there have been no changes to the university’s schedule and school resumes normally tomorrow. She is very much looking forward to hosting a student for Jumbo Days!

Thanks! We are heading out tomorrow, and looking forward to Jumbo Days!!!

Per the emergency update posted on the University’s homepage, today’s schedule was unaffected by yesterday’s tragic events, so Jumbo Days will proceed as planned. FWIW, the injuries that a small number of Tufts students sustained were relatively minor, and I believe all of those students had returned to campus by last evening. The head of the 100-runner Tufts Marathon Team that raised >$300,000 for anti-obesity programs and research was standing near where the initial explosion occurred, but escaped injury.

Latest official news

The three injured Tufts students were spectators. There were many Tufts students cheering on their classmates at the finish line and the blasts took a larger toll on spectators than runners.

Hi All,

First, thank you all for your concern about the Tufts family. Second, Jumbo Days is still happening as planned. We’re looking forward to welcoming all of you into the Jumbo community even if only for a day.

Justin

Thank God that the injuries to the Tufts students were not life-threatening. I am praying that they were not even serious.
Does anyone have further information?

I heard that Tufts is closed today - any updates?

A friend is there for visiting day. She said that acceptance students day is on but no professors are there. So I guess no lectures. I’m surprised its on at all. The whole are is on lockdown

D14 was scheduled for info session/ tour and athletic clinic tomorrow, pretty much all day. Just received email that everything cancelled and will be rescheduled at a later date. My husband made a quick call to main line and received a message that Medford campus closed.

The day was, as you can imagine, significantly altered by the events overnight, and by ongoing advisories issued in Boston, Cambridge, Watertown, and elsewhere. Neither Somerville nor Medford were included in the advisories issued, and both towns and our campus are considered “safe,” but because of the transportation and security concerns in our neighboring towns, campus was closed today.

More than 100 students were already on campus starting Thursday night, and families that arrived on campus this morning from all over the world, some of whom were learning about the events in the area for the first time when we greeted them on the steps in front of Cousens gym to inform them that they day’s had, in essence, been suspended and campus had been closed. For people that were present on campus, we held a highly abbreviated set of mostly improvised events, all of which took place in the athletics complex. We put safety first, the altered programming ended before lunch, and I hope that our visitors felt secure while they were on campus.

To those of you who visited campus today: thank you for your patience and understanding. It was a truly strange day, probably the most stressful of my (still-growing) career, and your collective graciousness made it so much easier.

To those of you who were slated to visit, and canceled: please let me know how I can help you (or your son/daughter) develop an understanding of Tufts we couldn’t show you today. My inbox and facebook feed has been generously filled by Tufts students saddened by events and disappointed they couldn’t meet our new class. I know they are eager to help, if they can.

If there’s a silver lining to the last 5 days, it’s been seeing the overwhelming display of goodwill and metaphoric hugs that seem to be all around me. Thank goodness for everyone.

Thank you, Dan.

Thanks as well to Tufts for putting the safety of its students, faculty, and staff first.

As an alum, I was grateful for the updates posted on the Tufts site about the status of the Tufts marathon team, volunteers, and spectators, as well as the crazy situation on Friday when much of Boston and nearby towns/cities were in lock-down during the manhunt. Tufts did all the right things under unprecedented circumstances.
