Will UCLA recind if I'm missing one class form IGETC?

Hi,

I got into UCLA. I'm an English major. I've completed all pre-reqs for English and finished my IGETC, but I wrote in my application that I'd be enrolled in a Physics class. I couldn't get Physics due to the budget cuts, and now my physical sciences is incomplete.

I told this to a counselor from UCLA in March. He said it was "No problem," as long as Physics wasn't a part of my major, and I'd have to take Physics at UCLA instead. He also told me I should report it ASAP. I didn't report it until now. Do I have a good chance of getting rescinded or am I safe?

(btw, typo on title: from*)

its tough to say. Im sorry to tell you, but i think that you will be rescinded. IGETC completion is a must for UCLA

also, did your counselor know that you needed this course to complete your IGETC…because it would be NBD if you were dropping it if you didnt need it, and maybe thats what he thought

yea your going to get rescinded. you don’t have to take physics for your physical sciences, there are like 10 other courses you couldve taken.

try to sign up for a summer course ASAP and report it–i dont know if they will even let u finish ur igetc in summer but its worth a chance

No, IGETC is not a must. It’s only available for California CC’s, which means those transferring from another four-year or out of state do not qualify for the completion of it. There is this thing they call ‘seven course pattern’ ([University of California - Admissions](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/paths_to_adm/transfer/tr_adm_reqs.html)) which outlines the types of courses you need to take to be eligible to apply as a transfer. It’s actually much easier than the IGETC but I hear you are not as competitive as those who have it under their belts. At California CC’s, It’s usually the majors that require a lot of pre-req courses (i.e. engineering and other science majors) that choose this alternative.

If you did put down that you’d be completing your IGETC though, there might be a problem… But when you do contact UCLA about it (or if it comes down to appealing…), you should mention that you’ve completed (if you have, of course) the seven course outline thing…

slowmotion is right… physics can’t be the only science course offered at your school.

The counselor was sent from UCLA to my school. I’m not sure who to trust…

btw the counselor knew it was necessary for my IGETC. I told him everything…

I just read this from here:
[University of California - Counselors](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/educators/counselors/adminfo/transfer/advising/igetc.html)

Now what do you guys think?

"IGETC is not an admission requirement. Completing it does not guarantee admission to the campus or program of choice. However, completing the lower-division breadth/general education requirements — whether through IGETC or the campus-specific requirements — may be considered by the campus in selecting among qualified applicants.

California community colleges may grant partial certification of IGETC to students who are missing no more than two requirements. Students submitting partial IGETC certification should complete the missing requirements at either UC or a California community college as designated by their department. Students who have been granted partial IGETC certification should not return to the community college for a full certification.

Students who do not complete IGETC before transferring will be required to satisfy the specific lower-division general education/breadth requirements of the UC college or school they attend."

**That’s exactly what the counselor said–he didn’t mention anything about the summer, but completing physics at UCLA.

^
It’s not an admission requirement but for UCLA/Cal it is crucial! Granted, there are some majors who could do without it (i.e.: engineering) but for the others, you NEED to have it. Maybe the UCLA counselor was confused and thought you commented that you simply needed to drop the Physics course (without its significance to your IGETC completion) because in my opinion, Physics would be my last option to choose to complete my IGETC, haha, there are much easier classes!

I’ve never heard of partial IGETC certification, at least, not at my college, you either do have it (you check it off on your transcript request) or you don’t, but this could vary.

Regardless, definitely call Admissions/let them know asap and ask what your options are!

The thing is UCLA accepted you thinking you were going to complete IGETC. It doesn’t matter that IGETC is not a requirement for admission; it is still a factor.
All you can really do is call them up and ask, then we can stop seeing this thread updated and get on with our lives.

Did you get in succesfully?

^^The OP’s profile says they haven’t logged on to this website since Sept 6th 2010. I’d be doubtful you’d get a response at this point.

This is a top result on google and reading it hurts so bad. Getting accepted and then rescinded because of a stupid misunderstanding is almost worse than not getting accepted at all.
