Hello every one, I am currently a senior at a high school in California. I really need some advice in getting into college. Well, i bombed my freshment year, when i got to sophomore year i got my gpa to 3.33 first semister and 3.5 second semister with regular classes. During junior year i had gpa of 4.16 for both semisters, i also took the sat 1 received llittle over sixteen hundred plus a 5 in chinese ap test. Now I m currently taking 2 honor and 2 ap 2 reg classes and planning to take sat 1 in oct+dec( if it isn't too late) and sat 2 in nov. The sat 2 test will be chinese and U.S history, which I'm confident to score 750-800 for the first and 600+ for the latter. I was involved in drama class and chinese club with around 30 community hours total(I think i will be able to get more 25-35 hours before nov). By the way, I will be a first generation college goer. I plan to major in cellular biology in college then get into grad school for researching related careers. I was going to apply for the CSUs, but my teacher told me that i might got a shot at UC riverside and UC Santa Cruz, could some one tell me what will be my chance like with my current circumstances or how i could increase my chance? Or maybe there are other colleges with good biology programs that i will be able to get into(if you know some, please leave the school names, i'll look it up)? Thanks everyone

The UCs don’t use your freshman grades when calculating your GPA for admission. You’ll be fine for admission to both UCR and UCSC if you do well when you retake your SAT-I tests. If you want biology, look at UC San Diego and UC Davis, which will be reaches for you if you don’t get your SAT-I scores up. You might also consider taking the ACT - maybe take a practice test and see how you do.

Good luck!

Hey, do you know what is a doable score that i need for uc davis? my cr is at 500 and math is at 580 right now for sat 1. As for sat 2, i’ll take 1 in us history and 1 in chinese, is that fine with uc? My friends been telling me to take math as a main subject, such as in eng, math, science. So Should i need to cram another subject before the test date? Thanks

Here’s what Davis looks for:

Your CR and Math scores put you in the lowest 25% of admitted students, so they’re definitely problematic and need to be raised if you want to give yourself a better chance.

The Math 2 SAT test would be worth taking instead of History if you think you can score better on it than the 600 you think you’d get in History. If you can’t do as well on the Math 2 test, then keep to your plan of taking the History one. Take a practice test to see how you do. Don’t take the Math 1 test.
