I’m in a kinda bad situation right now. I just realized today that I will be receiving a D in AP Chemistry which violates the UCSD contract which should rescind me.
My senior year GPA is still above a 3.0 (both semesters combined), and AP Chemistry is my 5th year of science (I took Chemistry Honors 9th, AP Bio 10th, APES and AP Physics 11th), and in all of these courses I got mostly As and a few Bs, so my A-G for science is well over complete.
I also have the option to enroll in a local community college to take Chem 1A (equivalent of AP Chemistry) and if I do so, then will I be able to compel UCSD not to rescind me?
The reason for my low grade is because of a 2 week leave I had to take because of a family emergency. During my 6 week progress report, I had a B in the class, but because I missed so much curriculum, my grade suffered. I also did my final research paper wrong and I offered to redo a portion of it which was wrong, but my teacher said that I couldn’t redo it.
Is there anything I can do to not get rescinded?
I called them today and one of the admissions officers said I likely will get rescinded, but I can appeal.
If I do get rescinded, will I still be able to attend UCR (I didn’t SIR there, but I am part of the Honors Program as well as a Chancellor’s Scholar)
I’m really worried and I would really appreciate any help/advice!
I know you are all upset but you need to breathe. You already know the answer to your question. As to whether UCR will accept you, you need to call them and ask.
@“Erin’s Dad” I emailed UCR today via the Growl Portal asking about having my provisional acceptance back. I did the same with UCI. I just really hope UCSD would consider my appeal as it’s my dream school. I also signed up for Chemistry at my local CCC today.
@ezraspineapple, did UCSD suggest to take that chemistry class in the summer and then appeal. I don’t see a problem with that. In the mean time what is your sir status, can you SIR to another UC. Also if you go to UCR or UCI, you can transfer after freshman year if you keep a good GPA.
@DrGoogle They didn’t suggest it to me, but when I suggested it to them, they said that it’d help my appeal as well as getting a high score on the AP Chemistry exam. Do you know how many appeals actually go through?
I don’t but I did help some people on CC appeal back when there was a point system. They were successful. I think you do have a case to appeal. Is school over yet? If not can you ask your teacher in high school to modify the grade slightly to help you. Mine got near a D+ and she managed to talk to the teacher and he raised her grade to C-. Luckily she went to USC anyway, her grades slacked off after she got admitted early in Jan, so she lost all the incentives to keep her grades up.
UC’s only accept Junior level transfers unless you have significant amount of AP classes, you will probably need to stay at the UCR/UCI or CC for 2 years. I hope your appeal works out for you and are able to remain at UCSD.
@DrGoogle Teacher has no mercy. I was actually at a 69.89% in the class and she refused to round up. She smiled and told me “Enjoy your 2 years in a JC”.
@Gumbymom I was accepted into my local CCC Chemistry class so hopefully things go well. I have about 74 credits at UCSD from AP Classes (13 tests passed).
It amazed me when a teacher did that to a student just to see them suffer? I am so sorry about your situation. I hope you can make it to your dream school.
I’m making suggestion here. If you not longer qualify to UCSD then when do they let you know so you can SIR to UCR. I don’t think you should SIR to two places. Technically you still qualify to UCSD until they tell you otherwise, like see your transcript. Take the Chemistry class and appeal to UCSD. If the appeal doesn’t go through then go to UCR with the scholarship and then transfer up.
@DrGoogle My late SIR deadline is going to be this Friday D: I’m going to call to UCSD and ask them if I can SIR to 2 places. They haven’t disqualified me, but they have said i’m likely to be canceled, but I can appeal.
@kchendds She’s an MIT grad and she said if I was rounded, then that would be unfair to all the other kids she’s never rounded. She also said it’s mathematically unethical or something.
UCSD didn’t revoke me at all. I took an “Intro to Chem” course at a local community college, earned an A, and gave them a transcript. They said it counted as a replacement of the “D” I’d earned in AP Chemistry.
@ezraspineapple Great job! I’m proud of the way you took charge of the situation and got it resolved. so many people just complain about the bad breaks they got that it’s refreshing to see someone take positive action.
