Nomir, Europe is never going to be united by US standards. There simply is too much culture, history and tradition for that to happen. Europeans are going to be united by a common sense of purpose and destiny. But it is going to take time. You have to realize that although the EU is 50 years old, the real changes started only 20 years ago. The next 50 years are going to alter Europe in many ways. The French "non" was more of a statement than a conviction. Many French are disatisfied with its government's move away from France's historically socialist model.

I agree that the US will resist Europe's attempt to rival the US militarily. But it is unavoidable. The US has shown to be opposed to all that Europe stands for, and it the gap is widening. Over the next 3-5 years, Europe is going to approve a single constitution. Soon thereafter, it will start working on pooling all of its resources for a central military join-strike force. It will not be as large as the US army, but it will be capable of handling its own military objectives and needs. As far as economic dominance, Europe may not be quite as dominant as the US yet, but it is getting there. Europe is already the largest economic entity on Earth. It is just a matter of time before Europeans start working together!

But we are at least 10 years away from seeing a multi-polar world...AT LEAST. I would say more line 20 or even 30 years away. But it will happen.
