Will weird standardized testing affect my chances?

Hey guys.

So.

I read that Brown considers the highest scores for each section from each time you took the SAT. I have a test in which I scored 800 on the CR, 710 M, and 730 W. My highest composite score is 800 CR, 680 M, and 770 W, though. Should I send in both scores or what? I guess I have a weird aversion to the below 700 score…

The other problem is that I didn’t do so hot on my SAT IIs (I only took them each once and did not study, assuming they would be as intuitive as the SAT I for some reason - none of the schools I’m applying to besides Brown require them, so I actually took them only for Brown!). I got a 770 on the Lit one but kinda blew biology and US history (high 600s).

I guess I’m just stressing over how these scores might affect my admission chances. Does having an SAT II score below 700 mean they won’t take me seriously? What about an SAT I score below 700? Even though I eventually pulled it up?

I know they look more holistically than that (my GPA and courseload is great…not the highest it could be for math but that’s not my forte), but I guess I’m worried about my ECs too. I didn’t cure cancer or anything, just played sports and made music. I dedicated a ton of time to both but on the didn’t cure cancer front I also never won national titles or anything like that.

I dunno what the point of this long thread is. I guess I’ve been kinda “scared away” from applying to Ivies. I’ve always considered them out of my reach. Do you all think this is true? Or do people overestimate the difficulty of admission? Am I too “averagely smart” for Brown?

You do realize that your scores are top-notch, right? You are good enough to apply. Not to mention the superscore is righteous.

When you send the SAT score reports from collegeboard, the colleges all have this software that automatically picks the highest scores from each session. And your scores are excellent! If your ECs are good and your GPA, then you should be all set to get into Brown!

No one’s too “averagely smart” for Brown. Brown takes people who seem interesting, as well as being smart. Just go ahead and apply! Your scores are definitely in the range for Brown, so there’s no downside at all. And don’t worry about the superscoring - just send in all your scores and Brown just looks at the top ones anyway. The SAT II scores aren’t an issue either. Good luck!

Just to put things in perspective: Your testing scores are not “weird.” They are excellent, across the board.

Brown will look at your highest SAT I scores, which for you is 800, 710 and 770. Which is about as good as it gets.

A 770 in Lit is an absurdly good score, and high 600s on the other two is also excellent. Don’t worry about those.

Based on your post, you seem to be a very viable candidate for Ivies. Don’t be scared to apply. What is the absolute worst thing that could happen? You won’t get in. Big deal – so, you’ll go someplace else. Which is exactly what would have happened if you hadn’t applied.

It is very hard to get in. Your chance of acceptance is less than 10%. But as long as you have applied to other school that you are happy to go to, there’s no reason not to apply.
