Hi, I am applying ED2 to Swarthmore. Everything from my scores (above their 75%) to grades, letters of rec, course difficulty, extracurriculars (strong social justice emphasis), common app essay makes me a strong candidate for admission. However, my “Why” essay was not very good, I really tried but did not communicate my desire to go to Swarthmore as well as I should have. I am worried this will ruin my chances for admission. Any insights?
I’m just a fellow prospective student, so I really don’t have any authority on this subject. However, I do think you should give yourself a break. It’s submitted now, so what’s done is done. There’s no way to know how an admissions officer will read your essay. Because essays are so subjective, it really might not be as bad as you think! Plus, you’re reviewed as a whole applicant, not just a single piece of writing. In any case, congrats for surviving the craziness that is college applications, and good luck!
@chicoan98 - My son’s Swarthmore (RD) essay was kind of the same. It just didn’t seem to convey the passion he feels for the school. I have no idea why but I’m sure that like his, your essay is technically well constructed and doesn’t say anything “wrong”. You haven’t ruined your chances. I would think that applying ED2 conveys your desire to go to Swarthmore better than a thousand words.

Did you get your decision back?
@Ruzzen
Yes! I am part of Swarthmore 2020!
Congratulations, I’m sure you’ll love it there! Also, I hope you wouldn’t mind me PMing you to ask a few questions
