I'm taking 15 credit hours this semester and need 12 to be considered full-time. I'm considering dropping a course because I'm doing very poorly in it and want to re-take it a different semester with a different (and hopefully better) professor.

I've never withdrawn from a course before, and while there would be a W on my transcript, it wouldn't affect my GPA and I'd still be a full-time student. If I withdrew from the course, though, would it affect the financial aid I've already received this semester? Would I have to make an additional payment?

If you’re paying the same amount, and you’re still full time, you’ll get the same amount of financial aid. If you’re not paying the same amount, you may get less financial aid; check with your school.

It depends on how your school does FA. At my daughters school she paid by the credit hour - so say a credit hour was $100 (ha ha) then 12 hours would be $1200 and 15 hours would be $1500. But FA for tuition was a fixed amount so did not increase or decrease based on credit hours (unless the student was below full time). So in her case, dropping from 15 to 12 hours, or increasing from 15 to 18 hours would have had no impact on aid.

Some schools do it differently though. Some may charge by the credit hour and may increase the tuition part of FA in you do higher than the minimum required for full time Others charge the same tuition as long as you meet the full time requirement - so 12, 15, or 18 hours would be the same.

It is important to check with your own school for their policy as there are so many variations. Make sure you check with the FA department, preferably an FA officer rather than a student helper. Good luck.
