Assignment:
Is it important to questions the ideas and decision of people in positions of authority? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with the reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

The term "authority" implies position of power. Whenever one has the ability to make a decision on behalf of another, or a group of people, there will likely be individuals who disagree with the decision. As human being with independent thoughts and ideals, it is in our nature to question the judgement of others, which may include questioning the ideas and decisions of people in positions of authority. While it is important for us to voice our opinions and attempt to bring about changes for the better, we need to do so at our own risk when said questions are directed towards people of authority. These risks can be especially prominent when we questions authoritative government figures. More often, we see these brave souls suffer personal consequences such as in the case of Chinese artist Ai Wei Wei and former US official Edward Snowden.

Ai Wei Wei is a contemporary Chinese artist who was arrested and detained on "tax charges" by the Chinese government. His works regarding the Sichuan earthquake highlighted corruption of the government officials during the aftermath, even when authority insisted that funds were allocated efficiently to the earthquake victims. Ai also created works that focused on bringing fourth democracy within the Chinese government. Needless to say, the furious government retaliated by arresting Ai and placing on house arrest thereafter. In this case, while Ai's message shed light on certain issues and helped bring about changes and new ideas, he suffered badly in the process.

Similarly, even if the authority is less of a controlling figure, questioning can still lead to undesirable impacts on those who speak out. Recently, Edward Snowden made headlines by revealing US government files regarding surveillance of the public. This lead to an outcry over media outlets and social media, who endlessly questioned whether the actions of the government is a morally correct decision. Perhaps's public outrage will bring about changes in the future. going back to the one that's filled this information initially, Snowden is now hiding in Russia and labeled as a traitor. Did he have to put himself in harms way? No, but his actions led to the clustering of government actions which will hopefully bring about change for the better.

In conclusion, while questioning authority can lead to change, it often comes at a personal expense. This means we must evaluate whether questioning authority is truely worth the risk and if we deem it worthy, we should not let authority scare us into silencing our opinions.
