What are the pros and cons of living in each of these residential colleges for a freshman? Do they appeal to different kinds of people or are they somewhat similar?

Willard is bigger
Shepard has more music majors (due to in-house practice rooms)

hey dfleish I think you mentioned you lived in Shepard. does it get loud in there due to music majors?

Nope, I live in Willard.

I live in Shepard...

i live on the first floor (closest to practice rooms). The only time you hear music from the basement is if there's a really blowhard trombone player with all the windows open. There was one like that this year but we got him to quiet down in the first week. ;)

Shepard and Willard both are very community-oriented dorms, although Willard has been described to me as an "island"; very separated from other dorms socially and physically. Shep and the Woo-shack even have a bit of a rivalry, although it hasn't been especially active this year...

Oh, by the way, the guy who said Willard was an island was the AC of willard (the boss of the RAs there).

man...i want to live in willard but i dont want to live on an island..

lol... from what i hear, it's a fun environment. also, a little less tame than shepard. i'm friends with one of the people who's going to be an RA there next year... He's a fun guy, but he'll be keeping to the rules. ;)

Also, as to the whole island thing, it's just meaning that generally people who live in willard have most of their friends in willard; which isn't necessarily a bad thing... willard's the biggest res college, so if you make friends with all the willardites you're not limiting yourself that much. heh.

Again, though, it's what you make of it and what you choose to get involved in. Choose whichever dorm you think fits you best, and then make the best of it when you get here. You can't tell what it'll be exactly without actually living in it. Good luck.

I don't really buy the whole island thing. Everyone I know here has a group of close friends, and those are the people they live with. It's only natural to stay close with the people who are RIGHT NEXT to you. Willard IS the farthest south dorm, but the people I know here are really social. If you make friends in classes, go greek, and try to stay active on campus- through clubs, theater, peer advising, etc.- you will surely make friends outside of your dorm.

keenya, have you seen cast away? tom hanks lived on an island and made friends with a volleyball. that sounds like a very unique undergrad expereince to me

hehehe. nice.
