William and Mary Class of 2015 Decisions

Thanks for the response. Yep, I already sent my deposit in somewhere else. I just figured that if I wouldn’t be able to afford it after being waitlisted, I would take my name off the list so that I wouldn’t be offered a place instead of someone who could actually go. Of course, I’m hoping that it all works out and I get in and can pay, but I’d hate to wrote a letter of continued interest, be offered a spot, and have to decline because of money.

Congratulations to everyone who was admitted!

Congrats Natalie.

Okay, few questions to address.

pwishes, unfortunately we do not conduct interviews once decisions have been released. If you wish to send your regional dean a statement of continued interest that’s the best way to let us know you really want W&M.

benditlikebenjii, a delay in submitting fin aid materials will delay our response. We encourage you to submit everything ASAP and you may want to contact Fin Aid (757-221-2420) to get a better timeline.

ooo0ooo, we may have limited financial aid to offer to waitlisted students but we will still package those students admitted off the waitlist to the best of our abilities.

roo685 and lamara, we certainly understand your disappointment in being waitlisted. The fact that such strong students such as yourself are on our waitlist and not in our class is a reflection of how strong our applicant pool is. Such outstanding academic and personal qualities are not uncommon in our pool which means we sadly have to not admit some amazing students. We know it’s hard to believe but a waitlist is in fact a positive decision.

We wrote an Admit It! blog about this very matter. It might provide some comfort and insight on our process ([W&M Blogs Decisions Decisions: Waitlist Edition](http://blogs.wm.edu/2011/03/29/decisions-decisions-waitlist-edition/))

[size=+2]Decision: Accepted/size

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2300 (800 Math 790 CR 710 Writing)
[] SAT II: 800 Chemistry, 800 Math II, 800 US History
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.9 ish?
[] Weighted GPA: 4.18
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Top 5%?
[] AP (place score in parentheses): European History (5), Latin: Ovid (2), English Lit (5), Chemistry (5), BC Calc (5), US History (5)
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Literature, Physics C, Statisticis, and US Government; dual-enrollment Multivariable Calc; band, theater tech, directing.
[] Number of other RD applicants in your school: Probably 15-20, out of a senior class of 80 (I’ve heard it was about a third of the class, including EA).
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): None.[/ul]
[/li]

Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): Ultimate Frisbee, Theater/Tech (student tech head, student director), Student Government which is a democratic assembly- students get to vote
[] Job/Work Experience: I did some paid tutoring.
[] Volunteer/Community service: None.
[] Summer Activities: I went to CTY (a gifted program run by Johns Hopkins) for two summers, and I played Ultimate in the local rec league, where I captained a team.[/ul]

Writing:[ul]
Essays: Common App: I wrote about how I wanted to go to college with people who really wanted to learn.
William and Mary (Unique): I wrote about the time I proved that the only regular polygons that tile the plane are triangles, squares, and hexagons.
Teacher Recommendation: I really have no idea, but I suspect they were fine.
Counselor Rec: Same
Additional Rec: N/A
Interview: I didn’t know they existed until sometime last November.[/ul]

Other[ul]
[] Intended Major: Mathematics.
[] Date Submitted App: December 28th, I think.
[] School Type: My (public) school was founded as an “alternative” program in the seventies; it’s lost some of that since then, but students are still given considerably more responsibility than normal. It’s also rather small (the senior class is 80 people).
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: EFC was something like 46k/year.
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):None that I can really think of.[/ul]
[/li]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Really good test scores and grades, and my courseload was almost the most rigorous possible for my school. I think my extracurriculars were pretty strong as well, if a bit unfocused.
[] Weaknesses: I didn’t show much interest.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: The strengths still outweighed that, and I am an in-state applicant.
[] What would you have done differently?: I expected to get in from the beginning, but, looking at the other people in this thread, I’m starting to think that I shouldn’t have been quite so assured (and I’m glad that my counselor convinced me to write the optional essay). I was still happy when I got the letter, though.[/ul]

Congratulations. Hoping you decide to join the Tribe!

To W&Mary Admission:

Is it still possible for a student to pay a deposit even after the deadline has passed? There were some unforeseen problems in my family and I am still very interested in attending. Thank you.

jazkhat, you need to contact our office immediately at 757-221-4223. Your request will be relayed to our Senior Associate Dean who will review your case and decide whether we can still accept an additional deposit.
