Hello all!
I’m deciding between OOS WM and Bing, but sort of a weird situation. My mom is planning on moving out of nys which could result in me losing my in state residency in NY. I like WM way more than bing so if my mom moves to Virginia I could get in state residency…? I plan on being a physicians assistant and attending pa school for grad school, however still want to have a good college experience now even at the cost of a few extra $$$. William and Mary gave me 0 aid, and I have $150,000 to spend for college. 4 years of OOS is around $240,000… What??? How can they expect me to pay this. Something seems off and nobody in my family is experienced with college… any advice?
Here’s what I would suggest: for right now, make your college decision based on what is affordable right now for you. I think instate residency should likely carry over for at least this year ( I am not an expert though, so consult their policies). If your mom happens to move to Virginia, then fantastic! You can apply to in-state schools in Virginia as a transfer and it will also be more affordable for you. As you can probably tell with the difference between in-state and out of state tuition, there is a significant difference and by moving in-state you may even qualify for more financial aid (W&M offers limited OOS FA).
William & Mary accepts significantly more transfer students, close to 50 percent and if you got accepted the first time, there is a very high likelihood that you will get accepted again. So I would go to SUNY or wherever is the most affordable right now for you – then if your heart is still set on W&M afterwards, you can transfer there afterwards. This would be especially beneficial if you have in-state residency, but it usually takes up to a year of living in state to establish in-state residency.
If you have any other questions about W&M, feel free to reach out – I attended there for undergrad and started a thread here: http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/college-william-mary/1728194-ask-questions-about-william-and-mary-here.html#latest
