I got an email indicating that I'm being reviewed for acceptance to the William D. Adams Presidential Scholar Program: naturally I'm ecstatic. It looks like a paid research grant, could anyone provide me with some further information regarding this scholarship?

I just got the same email! Definitely brightened up my day. Yes, that’s what it looks like - opportunity for a grant and to do research with some of the faculty on major projects pretty much as early as freshman year it insinuates? I’m planning on emailing the correspondent back and researching it some more, but it seems like an amazing opportunity.

I got the e-mail too! Are the research opportunities for 1 year or all 4 years, with the summer grant being separate?

Research grant?? Are you guys already at Colby? Or are you Fall 2013 RD applicants? domestic or int’l?

We are fall 2013 RD applicants, and I’m domestic… midwest

Fall 2013 RD here too. Mid atlantic

I got it too… Maine :p

Connecticut, Fall RD applicant

Got the email too (RD Washington State)! So excited! Do you think this indicates that we will be receiving generous merit aid?

no, it indicates just what the e-mail says …this is the only merit based scholarship Colby gives…

Colby doesn’t give merit aid - all aid is need based. This gives special paid research opportunities and access to research grants.

Okay I guess it is only for domestic students! Phew! I am an int’l but I’d love to have received such an offer! I am heavily interested in research.

Got that email today at our house. Very inviting opportunity for students who want to get involved in research right away. This letter is very compelling and definitely raises my opinion of Colby and how they’ve chosen to reach out to prospective students. Well done, Colby.

Got the email today… I don’t think it matters where you live but rather when they reviewed your application.
Looks interesting. Colby is definitely more enticing now, but if they can’t offer money I don’t know how high it can go on my list.
Does anyone know the perks of the program, other than grants? The UVA scholars program gets priority registration and nicer housing, for example.

Do you think getting into this program bodes well for getting into the really top LACs, like Bowdoin or Williams?

Colby may not technically offer merit money, but if you run the net price calculator on their website it asks for grade and test score information. Colby’s number for aid was significantly higher than any other LAC I tried, which makes me think there is some merit consideration there.

watson, that’s what we all wonder. Does getting flowers from Colby mean an engagement ring from Williams? Who knows?

I guess well just have to see… the waiting is the worst

We’re waiting on Pomona! Opposite corner of the country from Colby. My D is already into Swarthmore.

@watson221

That’s what I was thinking. My logic is this: if we are potentially the top 5-7% of applicants at Colby and many of the same people apply to Williams/Amherst/Midd/Bowdoin as do Colby then that means we’re at least in the top range of applicants at these schools. Maybe we’e at least in the top 10-20% at those other top LACs? I’ll take that…
