William & Mary Early Decision chances?

Well in most cases I think colleges would question your drop as a sign of “hmm he can breeze through the easy years, but can he handle school when things get tough?” However in your case you did mention that you had a family member pass away. Colleges take this into account. Although they say you can never use it as an “excuse” you at least showed that you were able to pick yourself back up. Class ranking I’m not real sure what to say. I go to a school in Northern Virginia that doesn’t’ do class ranking (not TJ). However its still pretty competitive as I see lots of kids get into schools like Cornell, Wash U, Northwestern etc. If your school is particularly competitive then your class rank won’t look as bad. I still think WM is a match for you. You have an incredible amount of leadership positions.

Thanks a lot for your opinion LiquidBunn, I’ll be working hard for this app.

Any other views? Honest ones? i submitted my app and all…but I’m dying here.

Don’t worry dude I have a lot of friends who submitted ED to WM like you. What major did you apply for? One of my friends applied for Computer Science which is really not in demand there. If you applied for an unpopular major it could help you out a bit

I went IR, Medieval&Renaissance Studies, and Linguistics

I was hoping the latter two were undemanded. I had to say IR cuz my interview made it really obvious lol

Does anyone think that I stand a poor chance?

Hey! It’s me again, I read your supplement essay and saw your chance thread.
You have good SATs which no one really mentioned, and if you fill out the part of the common app that lets you explain any hardships and explain your junior year grades (I think that on the common app, I home I’m not getting it confused with Apply Texas) and I think that your chances are really good.
As long as your recs are good, and I read your essay, you stand a good chance- your junior year grades shouldn’t get in your way.
Also explain some legit extracurricular experiences that you spend time doing- like debate. (I do it also!) have you been to districts, regionals, state, or possibly NFL nationals? If so, be sure to really express it on your app.

Oh! And your interview. Interviews are REALLY important to these schools, so that helps also! Unlike me, who blew her GW interview… Haha

hello again! I hope my recs were good. I talked about my EC in the EC blurb on the common app and a lot in the interview (policydebate/extempspeech). ive been to regionals for speech, and ive been to a few national tournaments for policy as well. i’ve listed all my awards ive won on the common app.

I really hope this interview was helpful. I know that 80% (if not more) don’t do interviews, so idk how helpful and significant it would actually end up being.

Yep yep yep, I think you have a great shot. Do you know the website parchment.com?
It is what I use to gauge my chances (i have the same username on that site). I would really recommend taking some time and setting up a profile, It takes a lot into consideration (like ED/EA, Interviews, Legacy, Awards, along with the typical stuff like academics) and gives you a percent chance of getting in (then a margin of error). Its pretty interesting… especially since I really wont be able to think about anything other than college until im accepted somewhere haha.

That’s actually a really good idea!!! I will get on that now…
This is slowly eating away my soul.

Guys would it be a bad idea to like … write a poem or w/e for the Dean of Admissions? And like I won’t make any attempt to hide the fact that I’m trying to suck up… if anything I’ll make it obvious that I’m acknowledging it.

guys i actually got thinking about the poem. would it be bad if i did that? i heard some people sent haikus?

Your stats are great, too bad for your GPA though. I’d say that you have an excellent shot at W&M, especially if applying ED1

Thanks for your input oohtobeagooner!

Do you guys think it’d be a bad idea to write a haiku/rap/anypoem and send it to them thorugh email?

I think you’re good. You’re SAT score is high and you’ve taken very rigorous courses.

Chance me back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1412484-chance-me-boston-university-ed-added-year-year-details.html

Thanks man! I appreciate these responses. Does anyone think I have a poor chance? I know I shouldn’t put all my eggs in one basket and that there is a college for everyone, but I really am relying on this school. I’ll be applying to plenty of other colleges as well, but this is what I almost NEED to go to.

Having said that, would it be a bad idea to write and send them a poem?

I don’t think I’d send a poem. You’ve applied ED and done the interview. Both are strong indications of your feelings about W & M. Like others, I think you will be accepted, but I’m going to throw out the possibility that they will defer you to be sure you do rebound from the problems junior year. The mid-year grade report won’t be there in time for the ED review (I don’t believe, anyway). Once they have that I’d feel pretty good about an acceptance, but don’t throw yourself under a bus if you are deferred. You’ve heard what they say about waiting to do RD if you know you can substantially improve your app, right? In your case, the message to W&M was that you really want to go there, which was made clear through ED, so that was a good idea for you. Still, from an outside perspective, I think seeing the senior first semester will be something they consider important before making an offer, and you’re doing well which is what they will likely be looking for.
Of course, I could be wrong. If you were my child, that would be my expectation though.

@89wahoo Thanks so much for that long and insightful answer. Much appreciated. I’ll just keep working at my senior year grades. No poem.

Hey guys I got my report card back today. Instead of 5 A+, 1 A-, and B ,
I got 3 A+, 2 A, 1 A-, and B.

2 of the A+ are creative writing and Academic government. The other one is AP computer science.

Would this change any assessment of chances? I’m really concerned that my junior year grades will kill all my chances.

I have been reading your thread… And I think you need to relax. There is more than one school that is the right fit for everyone. Your junior year was definitely not a good thing - and remember schools unweight your average (as every school does not have the same “weighting system”)- so your GPA will not be 3.99, but if your AP scores are 5’s that would offset the lower grades. Sending a poem would seem unnecessary (do you think it would sway their decision?). I would just take a breath. Let your application stand on it’s own merit. (I am also unsure as to why you want admissions to see you as quirky??)
