William & Mary/St Andrews Joint Degree Programme

I'm a senior this year, headed to college next year. I'm a Virginia student, and I visited W&M this summer and loved it. However, I'm conflicted as to whether or not I should apply to the program with St Andrews. I spent about three weeks in Scotland a few years ago and really enjoyed my time there, too.
My first choice of a major is geology, my second is international relations. The St Andrews program only offers four majors, one of which is IR, so that wouldn't be a problem. I'm worried that going to somewhere as tightly-knit as W&M, only to pick up, go across the Atlantic for a year, and then come back would totally prevent me from making long-term friendships. I feel like I'm just worrying too much, but I also feel like there's a chance that might happen. Should that prohibit me from applying?

Also, I do know this is a highly competitive program. I realize I would have to be accepted before I should start worrying about it.

Hi!! I’m in the program right now, except I am starting at St A. First I’d like to say APPLY! Then once you get an offer, decide. If you are already applying to W&M, just tick that one extra box, it can’t hurt to try to get in!
Second, think about your friends throughout school. They probably changed overtime and college is no different. Sure it sucks to have to make new friends, but you will probably be doing that throughout all of college. And here at St A it has been so easy meeting people and there are a ton of exchange students who will be in the exact same situation and looking for friends. Then once you come back, think of the experience you will get to share. I believe that worrying about not having contact with a couple friends is not something to worry about at all. Plus, there are other students in the program, you will likely become very close with them as you go through the experience together. Don’t let this little worry prevent you from applying. Also, consider applying at W&M or St A, both accept students. I’m an American starting at St A and I’m very glad I chose to start here and that I am in this program. So once again: APPLY!!
