[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
General Comments: surprised to receive news this early. They said in the letter that they sent some out to a few students they want to encourage especially to attend. Very excited but don’t know if I’ll end up there. Still an excellent institution and I am so grateful to have been accepted.

I got in  likely. I’ll posts stats when I get to my compy

[] Summer Activities: Duke TiP from 2007 - 2010, Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science (MITES) in 2011, Dartmouth Bound in 2011
[] Essays: Loved the first one. About my father and unique circumstances. Very bold and emotional in my eyes. Other essays were all strong imo, but I definitely preferred some over others.
[] Teacher Recommendation: I didn’t see them, but my bio teacher felt bad when I got deferred from Yale because she said she was too strict on my common one. I dunno how that’ll go…
[] Counselor Rec: No clue in the slightest.
[] Additional Rec: N/A
[] Interview: N/A
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Writing, scores relative to location, doing as much as I can in my school, summer programs.
[] Weaknesses: Lack of EC and leadership positions
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/denied: I straight up have no idea. I don’t think I’m that awesome, especially not for Williams to early admit me. I will forever wonder why I got accepted but am glad I did.
[] Where else you were accepted/waitlisted/denied:

Accepted: Dartmouth (likely), Columbia (likely), Fordham (likely), and various other schools (if you want to know, PM. Otherwise, wait til decision threads on the 29th. I’ll post the full list there.)

[] Volunteer/Community service: Private tutoring in various subjects (~100 hours), Hospital volunteering (~200 hours)
[] Summer Activities: Stem Cell class at UCLA.
[] Essays: Common App one was about changing from a highly competitive and obsessive mindset to a more communal one. Pretty decent. Williams Supplement was about the view outside my window, and how though I was going to miss it, it’s about time to make the next step in my life. I felt it was one of the better essays I wrote during the whole application process, even though it was a bit rushed.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Probably good. Was among the best students in both their classes, but didn’t talk that much.
[] Counselor Rec: Seemed optimistic about writing it, but probably more on the generic side.
[] Additional Rec: None.
[] Interview: None.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for financial aid? Yes
[] Intended Major: Molecular Biology
[] State (if domestic applicant): CA
[] School Type: Public (sends 1-2 students to top five schools, another 3-4 to top fifteen schools)
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Male
[]Income Bracket: Low enough to be a Questbridge Finalist.
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Questbridge
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Scores, possibly essays.
[] Weaknesses: Lack of awards, extracurriculars.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I really don’t know. I felt like I had a good shot, but I didn’t think I’d get an early write.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Deferred from Stanford and Yale through Questbridge National College Match. Officially accepted to UCI. Invited to compete for Regent’s Scholarship for both UCLA and UC Berkeley (supposedly a near-guaranteed acceptance).
[/ul]General Comments: I’m definitely glad to have Williams as a very strong backup as I trudge through March waiting for more results. This and the Regent’s invitations have boosted my confidence.

Decision: Accepted (Early Write)

Objective:[ list]
[] SAT I superscore (breakdown): 2330 (800cr, 800m, 730wr)

(*I sent in an update with new Scholastic awards from this year and a couple 1st places in speech tournaments, but that was rather recent, and it likely didn’t affect my application much.)
[] Job/Work Experience: None listed.
[] Volunteer/Community service: Substance-free group (President, Secretary, Youth Advisory Council at Statewide Conference, 4yr, ~400hr) - this has been my biggest EC
Writing (Write a brief description and Rate Quality on 1-10 Scale; 10 as Best):[ list]
[] Essays (Include Subjects):[ list]
[] Common App Main: Compares the steps of folding a paper crane to “folding” self-confidence; each step includes a specific moment when I learned something meaningful.
[] EC Short Answer: Substance-free group
[] Supplement: Admittedly recycled from another college’s supplement; cutting down the words from ~500 to ~300 likely affected the quality. The essay itself traced my development as a writer and optimist through the process of writing my first novel in middle school.
[] Other:
[ ] Teacher Recommendation #1: didn’t see, from IB Coordinator who knows me and my values very well (3yr)
[] Teacher Recommendation #2: didn’t see, from lit teacher who knows how much my writing means to me; I’ve done very well in her class (3yr)
[] Counselor Rec: didn’t see. We talk quite often, though!
[] Additional Rec: sent a rec from my math teacher, only because it was on my naviance :stuck_out_tongue: (2yr)
[ b]Other**[ list]
[] Date Submitted App: sometime in November…
[] State (if domestic applicant): NJ
[] Country (if international applicant): n/a
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Chinese
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: Highish.
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I’ve heard that “Asian” counts as a URM at liberal arts college. Other than that, none.
Reflection[ list]
[] Strengths: Objective stats, creative essays
[] Weaknesses: No major awards, no outstanding ECs
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I’m not sure, but I’m quite thankful!
[] What would you have done differently?: Work harder on that supplemental essay, perhaps send in an arts supplement. But I got in!

**General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc:
Wow. Wow, wow, wow. I never expected to receive an early write/likely letter from anyone!

Decision: Accepted - Early Write
Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2300 (740/760/800)
[] ACT: 34 (not submitted)
[] SAT II (if submitted): 730 Chem, 760 Math I, 740 Math II
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 5/375
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): US History (5), Chemistry (5), Calculus AB (5), English Language (5), Government (5)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): n/a
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Calculus BC, AP Biology, Lab for AP Bio, AP English Literature, AP Psychology, Chamber Choir, Computer Literacy
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): AP Scholar with Distinction, if that counts as “major”?
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Significant involvement in school theatre productions, International Thespian Society (President), selective school Chamber Choir (Soprano Section Leader), church choir, Tri-M Music Honor Society (Historian), Invisible Children Club (Treasurer), National Honor Society, Science Bowl, Young Democrats Club, Class Council
[] Job/Work Experience: none
[] Volunteer/Community service: Volunteered at an equine therapy program for the disabled over the summer, actress/assistant director in years of VBS programs at local church
[] Essays: Common app was on my differing strong interests in the concreteness of math/science and the spontaneity of theatre… balance of perspective, fixed and fluid outlook, yadda yadda yadda. I really struggled with this essay, probably writing a good 20 versions on different topics, but I was somewhat pleased with the final result. Window essay was on windowshopping at Teavana and being a tea-drinker in general.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Pretty good.
[] Counselor Rec: Never read it, but it’s his first year, so it’s surely nothing fantastic.
[] Additional Rec: n/a
[] Interview: n/a
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[] Intended Major: Neuroscience
[] State (if domestic applicant): MD
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Caucasian
[] Gender: Female
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): Odd first gen situation – my mother didn’t go to college and my father is absent (and consequently not shown on commonapp)
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: GPA, scores to a certain extent, essays?
[] Weaknesses: Nothing particularly standout (scores, ECs, awards, etc)
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: The only thing I can attribute getting Early Write to (as a non-URM non-athlete with non-spectacular test scores) is, perhaps, my essays, and maybe my partial first-gen situation.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to Washington College, UPitt, UVA Early Action; waitlisted at WUSTL

[/ul]General Comments: Incredibly, incredibly surprised to have gotten in, let alone to have gotten Early Write. I’m so relieved to have an acceptance from as good a school as Williams as I await my other decisions this month.

[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: UMichigan (Accepted), University of Illinois (Accepted), Washington University in St. Louis (Accepted), Caltech (Deferred - Rejected), MIT (Deferred)[/li][/ul]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Essays, class rank/ course rigor compared to others at my school (there’s crazy grade inflation at my school), and maybe recommendations.
[] Weaknesses: My ECs/awards are nothing special, I don’t have a particular career/major planned.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My writing is definitely what made me stand out. I get good grades and I’m in leadership positions at my school, but I never expected an early write (I didn’t even know that existed)!
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: University of Chicago (Early Action)[/li] General Comments: This was a wonderful surprise. It makes the wait for my remaining schools that much easier. I’m not sure if I will attend but I’m so thankful for this opportunity. Congratulations everyone  [/ul]

Wow…I really feel quite inferior in comparison to the others who received early write acceptances!

That’s how I feel too! I’m so confused haha

Sent from my SPH-D710 using CC

Wow… we have the same ACT, SAT, IB stuff, AP score, and applied for the same major! loll

I hope that’s proof that they didn’t make a mistake for either of us :stuck_out_tongue: haha
