I am currently deciding between Williams College in Williamstown, MA and the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. Further, I was accepted into the U of Mich Honors Program which makes my decision even more difficult. I am going to be studying political science with a minor in either economics or applied statistics. Some things that are important to me in a college are close relationships with professors, internship opportunities, motivated students, career resources and a strong alumni network. I am also interested in studying abroad and doing research. I don’t know which one school to choose! Please help me decide. All input is appreciated!
Is there a cost element to consider?
I’d recommend Williams at least partly because it would be the rarer opportunity.
Both great choices! You can’t go wrong.
If finances or nearness to home make Michigan the winner, you will be able to get a great education there.
Otherwise, your interests align well with Williams.
Close relationships with professors are a hallmark of the Williams experience, where undergrads join profs for research, publication, dinner at their homes, etc.
Williams has a great alumni network.
Economics, math and poli sci are all stellar departments at Williams.
The biggest choice, once you rule out cost or distance from home, will be large vs. small. Williams provides the epitome of the small liberal arts college experience. Small classes. Tight relationships with professors. Great bonds with classmates which begin with the Ephventures orientation and then the experience of living in an “entry” group with 19 other freshmen. You will either want that or see it as “too small” and want the larger university experience Michigan can provide.
