Williams v Bowdoin v Middlebury

Lots of kids from CA at Williams. Not sure about the other Western States.

S had four California kids out of 20 in his frosh entry.

I think there are more NY’ers at Williams than New Englanders. Some are wealthy (not usually old money though) and some are not (including us.)

In my experience most kids just intuit which school is most them. Of course adcoms might not agree.

I fell madly in love with Midd after my S was already at Williams, but it didn’t matter. He fell madly in love with Williams.

I am still moved by Chamberlain. Perhaps because Jeff Daniels played him in the move GETTYSBURG.

Both my kids liked Bowdoin, though neither ended up there. Both liked Midd, though neither ended up there.

I agree with OldBatsieDoc. As I said before, I think most students who liked one would also be happy at the others.

For my son The Clark Museum, which is in Williamstown along with the Williams College of Art on campus, has been very important. He sophomore year his dorm was practically next door and he went to every exhibit and worked there last summer. He is thinking of Museum Studies, something he didn’t consider at all until working there. MassMoCA (MA Museum of Contemporary Art) is nearby in North Adams.

For what it’s worth, I spoke to President Falk about a shuttle bus to North Adams on weekends, and that might happen. It is five to ten minutes away and has a ten (or something like that) screen movie theater and many restaurants.

Dad2 - interesting comparisons. I would say:

swarthmore is more of a MIT (nerdy)

williams & amherst - harvard and yale (the indisputable #1)

bowdoin and midd - princeton & dartmouth (great schools but a little more laid back)

again, everything read on these boards should be taken with a grain of salt. please visit them yourselves and see for yourself before deciding!

@pdad: your D’s stats look solid for being reviewed in the “A” pile. My D received an early write this year with slightly lower SAT scores and similarly limited AP options. But the info you did not not include is the most important: what does she love? I am convinced that my D (not a recruited athlete although athletic, not a musician although musical) stood out because she has a non-pre-packaged academic passion which made her real. Despite the disability of a multi-generational Amherst legacy…

this is actually a great summary of the schools."

i agree with whoever said this

the average kid at williams & amherst (very typical of harvard) will probably be stuck-up & pushy about how many “director’s cups” they’ve won even when their school never wins any titles and is good at sports no one cares about, be socially awkward, and not anyone i’d want to be friends with

whereas the average kid from bowdoin and middlebury (typical of princeton) are going to be less stuck-up and cooler people in general as WELL as being well-rounded and smart people

I too wonder about the over focus of athletics in the responses and I was a three sport athlete. However, clearly Williams has been a consistent league power in football among other team sports.

Bowdoin is a bit smaller than the other 2 schools and I agree more New England focused.

Boy, the OP picked three great schools to discuss! The thinly veiled knocks on all three schools are really laughable.

Fully agree with this…

Feeder Colleges to top Business, Law and Med Schools:

<a href=“WSJ in Higher Education | Trusted News & Real-World Insights”>WSJ in Higher Education | Trusted News & Real-World Insights;

21.5% - Harvard

18.0% - Yale

15.8% - Princeton
5… 9.1% - Williams
9… 7.7% - Amherst
19… 4.0% - Bowdoin
23… 3.6% - Middlebury

Wow. These posts aren’t painting any of these schools in a positive light.

This rank shows the number of students being accepted to a top grad school / the total number of students… so it’s not showing anything…cause if 50 students from each college (MIdd, Williams and Bowdoin) apply to top grad schools and ALL get accepted then…Williams will get the best rank, then Bowdoin and then Middlebury, because of their student population…

I think it’s about this time tihs tread to reach its end…ALL of these colleges are great…IT"S A MATTER OF FITTING IN… :-D

Haven’t visited the other two schools, but I hated the first year dorm set up at Williams.

A Wall Street Journal study (now a few years old) ranked Williams as the only LAC in the top 5 feeder schools to the most selective professional schools (Law, medicine, business), along with HYPS.

It was published in 2004.

I visited williams and middlebury and. I liked both very much. I also applied to bowdion and will visit if accepted. The rankings gererally list williams on top of this list however all 3 are great schools. Visit and see for yourself

WSJ ranking?

It’s an old story.
Williams wouldn’t be ranked even in top 10 now because of the relative grade deflation.
Don’t know about Amherst or Bowdoin, but Middlebury is also a tough school in my opinion.

^ ^ Actually, Williams has been ranked number #1 in both USNWR (which I think most CC’ers are pretty obsessed with) and Forbes this year (not an “old” story).
Take rankings with a grain of salt, anyway.
