Williams vs. UVA

For Poli Sci/History/Political Philsophy/Law

I think the Williams poli sci professors are less famous than Larry Sabato, but they have much better hair-pieces.

Hair-pieces aside...

I can't say anything about UVA personally, but I Williams has excellent departments across the board, including Poli Sci and History. If you're looking for an excellent undergrad experience that will eventually lead to law school, I'd definitely go with Williams. You'll have better access to professors and we're top-tiered in terms of business, law, and medical school placement, coming just after HYPS.

UVA obviously has a great History department and very good Poli Sci as well. They also have top 10-15 Law School if you wish to just stay there. From a pure academc standpoint though, Williams will give you a lot more attention (although that isn't as big of a concern in humanities) I heard UVA can be very cliquey.

From an academic and undergrad experience standpoint, Williams should be a clear cut choice. It's the no1 lib arts college with a student:faculty ratio of 8:1 compared to UVA's 15:1 ratio. Therefore you can assume that the classes in Williams would be much smaller and the academic experience, much richer. In terms of selectivity,Williams accepts about 18% of it's applicants compared to UVA's 40% ish. In terms of resources, UVA's endowment per student roughly equals to $ 170,000. Compare that to Williams' endowment per student which is a staggering $750,000. And as a feeder school, Williams is ranked no 5 while UVA is ranked no 33 (Wall street journal ranking).

If you are not on finaid, then Williams would be a lot more expensive than UVA i believe. So i think the most valid reason to choose UVA over Williams is the cost. I guess you have to do a cost -benefit analysis on that one.

Best of luck:)
