Wilson Research Grant

I did use the search engine to find out this answer, but it was only answered by students and not by AdmissionsDaniel....so I just want to confirm..

can a student apply for the grant after their first year, or do u have to send it in with your application. I applied ED and i have already sent my app in, so does this mean i will not have a chance for reseach during my 4 yrs at JHU (knock on wood if i get in)?

thanks!

"The fellowship provides up to $10,000 to 15 freshmen (up to $7,500 to five sophomores) in the support of project expenses—including travel, equipment, and the use of archives or laboratories."

You can still apply for a fellowship now because it'a seperate application, and they don't make the decisions until the Regular Decisions come out. Even if you don't get a fellowship, you can still easily get a research job in a lab. Check the Hopkins Interactive message boards.

Be forewarned that a very very small percentage of the Wilson Fellows are ED acceptees. Word on the street is that it's used as a carrot to get RD people who might be leaning towards other schools.

But, never fear, there are TONS of other research possibilities, fellowships, grants, etc.

I was ED and I got the Wilson Fellowship, so it's not impossible

You can still mail your application for the Wilson in anytime before January 1st. I definitely recommend applying for it, it's a great program.

Also, my friend who applied ED didn't apply when she was doing her application, but applied when she was a freshman and got in

Also to note, there are other fellowships besides the Wilson (the Provost's Undergraduate Research Award comes to mind)

Ok let's clear up some information:

(1) Anyone (ED & RD) can apply for the Wilson Fellowship. The deadline is the RD deadline - January 1, 2007. That holds true of ED applicants too as all Wilson decisions are made at the time of RD decision release. So even if you applied ED already, you may still submit the Wilson application.

(2) Rising sophomores may apply for Wilson fellowships, as well as a number of other research fellowships and grants Hopkins makes available to its undergraduates.

(3) ED applicants have the SAME CHANCE for getting a Wilson fellowship as do RD applicants -- and shelly147 is not the only ED student to get a fellowship. The Wilson Fellowship IS NOT used as a conversion tool as silver4 stated. Since decisions about the Wilson fellowship are made by a faculty panel and relate to the Wilson application, they are not connected to a student's admissibility or likeliness to attend Hopkins. The fellowships are given to the student's who will best succeed as Wilson fellows, despite being ED or RD.

(4) Finally, there are MANY, MANY other research opportunities other than the Wilson fellowship.
