I read in some of the Penn Computing stuff that Penn doesn't support Windows Vista Basic but will support Windows Vista Premium. How do I know which one I have?

Click on Computer and then System Properties - it’ll tell you the Windows Edition at the top.

Nice, thanks!

If you do have Vista basic, you can buy an upgrade to Vista Business or Vista Ultimate from the Computer Connection (oddly they are both priced at the same price…somewhere between $60 and $80)

or, if you’re an engineer (or know someone who is), use your msdn access to get vista business for free!

another question but not related… somewhere i heard that the antivirus stuff they give you at penn (for free i think too, right?) isn’t very good… is that right or wrong?

I personally had problems with the Symantec Endpoint Protection Penn gives us. It didn’t install properly and had lots of problems (none virus related though) till I manually uninstalled it. I now use nod32 [ESET - Antivirus Software with Spyware and Malware Protection](http://www.eset.com/) and am happy with it. I’m sure you’ll be fine with Symantec (my roommate has no complaints so far), AVG, or avast! which are all free. Just don’t open shady emails, download shady attachments, or go to shady websites. If you want to have 0 threat of viruses get Linux and spend the next month getting acquainted with it.

I didn’t have many problems with Symantec Endpoint protection when I put it on the Windows installation on my MacBook. Then again I didn’t spend much time using Windows.

Linux (Ubuntu in particular) is definitely worth a look.
