Windows Vista

I was recently on a discussion board on facebook for the Cornell Class of 2012. One person wrote that Cornell's network does not yet support Vista, Is that true? If so, what should I do? I will be a Hotel School Fresh in the fall and am think about computers. I like HPs. Sorry Mac users. I have them at school, but I just can't afford one. I would (maybe) if I could get a Mac, but I like the design as well as capabilities or HP is running Vista, which I currently have at home.

Can anyone solve the Vista problem?

I don't know where you'veheard that cornell's servers don't work with vista, but that's not true. I have a vista-equipped HP (good choice, btw) and uPortal, JTF, Kerberos, etc. all work fine on it.

XP > Vista.

Is macintosh supported?

i have Vista Basic -__- which is basically XP -o- idk why they make it...

farahe221: at the moment, Mac OS X Leopard cannot support the Kerberos authentication system and so you need to access Just the Facts and COLTS (an online time card system) via the web. I'm running Leopard so this is what I have to do...

Cornell is switching to a new course enrollment system, but I don't know how this will work. If you've got concerns...contact CIT.

If you are afraid of compatibility and want a MAC. Get a mac with leopard, which would help you and then using boot camp boot up XP on your comp for stuff you cannot do with the MAC.

Orrr if you dont want any hassle at all, Buy a laptop with XP. This way you don't need to worry abt Vista or MACs. It will prlli b cheaper with better performance. I would take this option if I were you and upgrade to a Mac in the future.

Vista is not worth it. Its not even funny the amt of people who have it and hate it. Its become so that MS has had to STILL sell XP to all their vendors, just to sell the same amt of OS's they usd to before. Vista has scard away a lot of ppl from buying brand new PCs. Thas why Dell, HP, and all the major manufacturers are offering XP still. I have Vista and it is so slow unless you have atleast like 3gb of memory = $expensive$ for avg. person/college student.

I still use XP for the majority of the time. lololol

I currently run a new HP desktop with Vista, so I'm used to it. I think part of the reason people hate vista is because they reimaged the whole Office to seem more like mac and they added mac like applications like Gadgets.

Any way. I'm planning on getting and HP with 3GB Ram. 250 Hard Drive and is only $849.99, not bad I might say.

BTW. Not much of a computer person, but what is Keberos, and all that stuff Lieutenantlard said?

All the stuff that lieutenantlard mentioned are applications that you'll become very familiar with once you're at Cornell. ;) Uportal is what you'll use to check your Cornell email (unless you decide to forward your mail to a different server, like Gmail) and Just the Facts (JTF) is what you'll use to enroll in courses, add/drop classes during the semester, check grades, and other important things.

I got a new computer with Vista this year, and I haven't had any problems with it so far. I wouldn't be too concerned. As dewdrop mentioned, Cornell is changing its course enrollment system, but I would imagine (hope?) that it will be fine on Vista.

ahh vista was awful.

that is the reason i got a macbook. hahah

I hate Vista. I created the group "Vista Haters" on hi5 lol. There are a lot of bugs in this system. I always see "Not responding" window on my screen

it was awful. i broke my dell laptop and they gave me a new one with VISTA. i hated it. HATED it. it served no serious benefit to my existence.

so i got a macbook and i must say i am in love :)

Kerberos is a user authentication system....you'll become very familiar with it when you get here :-)

It's funny though....I can't use the BASIL infrastructure b/c Leopard isn't compatible with Kerberos but I can send my Cornell e-mail to my Mac mail client and need to use Kerberos authentication to log in.....I'm not a computer junkie so I don't understand :-)

um, i use a macbook now to log onto kerberos to check my application status/financial aid. Is that the same thing?

no...that's web based. Leopard is not compatible with the Bear Access suite you have to download to your desktop.

I can access any web based applications...

Vista is fully supported by Cornell Information Technology.

Cornell's updates just aren't working well with the new software from Microsoft or Mac. It hasn't been a problem for me as I just do everything online (instead of clicking a desktop icon to add my work hours, I go to a bookmarked page online and do the same process - both require internet).

Still, I do not think it's anything to worry about. 95% of the time you'll be using other programs such as firefox/safari, word, powerpoint, etc.

thanks everyone. just wanted to get all my comp questions out of the way BEFORE i buy my new laptop

please ask students about the potential savings by buying your Mac at Cornell rather than now - my son started Cornell with a desktop 5 years ago but his Sr. year his birthday gift was a laptop - he was pretty up on computer stuff and told his dad that getting the laptop at cornell was the way to go...

please ask other students about this ...

oh yeah - Cornell students get discounts on Macs. :)
