All my life I have been a windows person, but I have recently seen apple computers from my friends. I plan to study music production or some type of design. I want to know about the positive and negative aspects of mac and what advantages and disadvantages does it have when comparing it to Windows.

i prefer windows because i havent tried mac, windows is the best ofr doing homework its really complete and good. i love windows.

mac definately has great tools for music production (aka Soundtrack Pro 2) and design (motion)

Macs are definitely best for what you're interested in. Their ease of use is way, way, way better than Windows.

mherrera...get a mac 8)

Personally, I believe Windows is just a really nice overall well rounded operating system, but Mac I've heard is just amazing with all types of media, from photography to movies. I just hate em because they are soo friggin' ugly

i prefer Macs 8) I used to have a Windows and updated to Vista almost as soon as it came out... and two days later, my entire computer crashed, complete with a 50 page history magazine XD way to go windows. soo i've switched to a Mac and I love it.

Ummm...people, Macs can run Windows.

I think you mean PC vs. Mac--PC including all non-Mac computers, such as Dell, Toshiba, etc.

i'll second bre's post here. Intel macs (any new one) are windows compatible. I've seen parallels and its amazing. The two operating systems work seamlessly together, just like classic and OSX.

I would suggest getting a mac. Especially now that you can run windows on it, macs are overall just the best deal.

from personal experience- i've had many pcs and windows laptops. Each has broken or had to be reformated within 6 months. My powerbook? I've dropped that multiple times, stepped on it with my full weight (don't ask), spilled mountain dew on it, colored it, gotten earings stuck in the cd drive, and broken the power cord completely in half. it still works perfectly (even the cd drive!) and i have no problems with it. (cept one small thing with ichat but that was my fault completely) And I'm proud to say that i've had it over a year and a half now and i haven't had to reformat it yet.

PC - games
Mac- everything else

Well, there's actually different comparisons being made here:

Pc vs. Mac

I would choose PC in a heartbeat. Macs are crappy for customization, and while they look pretty and have good build quality, you pay out the ass for it. I'd rather be able to completely customize my machine on my own terms, for less money, thanks.

Furthermore, PCs can run things other than Windows - Linux obviously springs to mind as the main alternative.

Mac OS vs. Windows

Not so sure here. If both had equal software availability, I might go Mac. But they don't, so I won't. I also have some issues with Apple's business model in relation to the OS, but that's a different discussion.

Mac. :] For arts! :P Windows for games!

Macs cost a good deal more.

Macs cost a good deal more.

Not entirely true now though there may be a little premium but it's all worth it.

-You don't have to buy extra software such as Anti-virus
-You get awesome service and support.
-You get a quality product in terms of build quality and design.
-You lose the worry about being careful on your computer. Browse any site without worrying about viruses and such.

Macs are great for everything except gaming. If you want to game, just install Windows on the mac and bam! :D

I'm definitely a mac person.
I really just don't like windows for some reason.

The whole "Macs for arts" thing is old and stale.

I use my Mac to do Stata and Excel. I also play Oblivion on it (in XP) at times.

That's not "arts." That's serious business and gaming. And I don't have any problem doing it like my Windows using friends do it.

The problem with Windows is Windows Vista. We bought a brand new PC that came with Vista, and it takes up SO much memory that it made the computer run ridiculously slow and and made things basically not work, for lack of better words. Keep in mind that this was a brand new computer that should have no other reason to run so slow. I guess the reason for this was all the extra graphics and effects and unnecessary crap. We also got the new version of Microsoft Office that works on Vista, and that was no better either. I could barely figure out to work the new pimped-out Word, but that wasn't so much of the problem as the slowness. So we bought more memory and it didn't do much to help. So then my dad screwed around with it and changed all the settings so it looks like the Windows '00 or '98, you know grey toolbar (not XP) and it works OK now. But it was just a nightmare. STICK WITH XP IF YOU GO WITH WINDOWS.

tennisgal89,

New is by no means any indication of the quality of the hardware. If you're running it on less than 1GB of RAM and on a Celeron, it's going to run slowly. You really need top of the line hardware for Vista...

Windows Vista OS is a complete rip off most other Operating Systems are free to arround $50 but Windows goes too far by charging $400. for their best software . overall i believe that windows sucks compared to Mac. Mac rocks.. and i don't even own a mac =]

Hang on a sec. First of all, while Windows is pricier in its most feature-laden form, "rip-off" may be a bit of a poor phrase. Many OSes ARE free, and yes, many are cheap. MacOS, for example, is not. It is, in fact, fairly pricy (even compared to Windows.) Vista Ultimate is a bit expensive, but it's also an extremely robust piece of software with high sunk costs that MS needs to recover.

As a consumer, you make a choice. You currently don't have to own Vista. You can choose to purchase it because you feel that it will offer you utility beyond the money you spend. That's fine. For many users, the $400 is actually a perfectly reasonable price, as they'll use the features that are built-in and benefit from them.

I do prefer MacOS after my time with it, but Windows has a lot of good features and Vista is a surprisingly robust OS. I only wish that it didn't require so much hard drive space.
