I'm looking at the academic calendar and I see that final exam period is 12/17 - 12/21. Does that mean I can't schedule my kid's plane flight home until 12/22? Are the exams only in the morning, so an afternoon flight would work? Or should I wait until classes begin before I book a flight - will they tell the students when the final exam schedule will be right at the beginning of the semester?

Thanks for any help!

Good question... my parents just went ahead and purchased me tickets to return on the 22nd.

yea, MIT's not so great about the whole final exam schedule

you get a list of the exam times during the first half of the semester, but a lot of times people have time conflicts, which means that they have to wait another month or so before their exams get rescheduled

you could either wait until then to book your tickets, or just play it safe and book it for the 22nd. exams usually don't last beyond 4:30 (unless it's one of those pesky ex camera 6 hour ones), so a night flight should work too

The registrar's office says the final exam schedule will be available (here) on September 20.

If possible, I would encourage you to wait until the schedule comes out to book your son's flight -- there's a decent chance his finals could end on Wednesday of exam week, since few finals are scheduled for Thursday and Friday.

Both terms of my freshman year, I had a math final (18.02 and 18.03) on either Friday morning and Thursday afternoon, respectively. I don't know if it's a recurring theme for those classes, but definitely plan to wait until after the finals schedule is out before booking your flight... there's still plenty of time to save some money on a ticket.
