So I want to buy tickets to come home for winter break, but I'm not sure when it is. The schedule says December 3rd is the last day of classes for undergrads, but it says that on the 23rd the break actually begins. So what's going on in between?

Here is a link to the official school calendars. It looks like finals week ends December 14th. [Office of the Registrar | Tulane University - New Orleans, LA](Calendar | Office of the University Registrar)

Aaah, thank you! Guess I found a different schedule than that one

I think they said at orientation that a student has to leave the campus within 24 hrs of their last final, so if your last final is Wednesday, you have to be gone by Thursday for instance. They were advising students and parents to not make travel arrangements until getting the actual finals schedule, and even waiting until after the first couple of weeks (in case you decide to drop a class and thus change the finals schedule).

That is true about waiting to make sure you know your finals schedule. However, and Tulane wouldn’t like me saying this I suppose, they really don’t enforce the “24 hour” rule. Unless every RA is going to reconcile your schedule to when you should leave, I see no way for them to do this. Of course, most students have no reason to stay more than maybe an extra day. Now having said that, you do have to be out by the end of the next day after the last final, maybe even by noon or something like that. But if your last final was on Wednesday and you couldn’t get a decent flight until Friday, no one is going to care.

That’s good to know, fallenchemist. The risk of waiting until the final schedules are “finalized” is that tickets will be more expensive and scarcer. USA Today just had an article on this trend, which is apparently different than the situation last year:

Winter break: halls close on 12/15/10 (Wednesday) at 9:00 AM; halls open on 1/9/11 (Sunday) at 9:00 AM

Spring move out: halls close on 5/8/11 (Sunday) at 9:00 AM (except for graduating seniors who move out by 5/13/11 [Friday] at 5:00 PM)

Agreed-- they dont give your the boot the day after your finals are over (well, maybe you’ll be hanging out at the boot, LOL) but they do close the dorms about 24 hrs after the very last final is given.

they don’t kick you out, they just want you gone so you aren’t loud and distracting kids who have to study for finals. you can stay, it doesn’t matter.

however, if the last day of tests is the 14th, you’ll probably have to be gone by like 6pm on the 15th

Correct on all counts boozle, except I think it is 5 PM.
