Winter Carnival

For current D students or anyone else who knows,

When does the Winter Carnival at D start and when does it end. Also, what exactly goes on during the carnival...what are the main events?
Thanks!

This year, Carnival is Feb. 10-13. The schedule's not up yet, but when it is, it can be found here: http://www.dartmouth.edu/~sao/events/carnival/

As far as main events: the polar bear swim (definitely worthwhile) in Occum Pond, watching the Carnival itself at the Skiway, a student sled race, climbs to the top of Baker Tower, most of the good frat parties, hockey home series, and a lot of crazy stuff.

Winter Carnival is great, but Green Key is So Much Better.

Hi Wisconsinguy and AthenaNY,

Hope that all is going well with midterns and that you aare really braving the hanover cold. How's the pirate shp coming along? I guess Winter Canival will be a much needed break.

is it common for non-sophomores to spend a summer term at D?

Thanks Sybbie for all of the info about Green Key!

It depends, some students may be in Hanover working on campus (I believe Athena mentioned that she will be working on freshmen housing this summer), Interning, or doing research or attending classes .

Students who will be working on the DOC trip (trip leaders, H crew, etc) will be on campus a few weeks over the summer.

Yes, I am spending the summer working at the housing office. (And taking an LSAT course!)

It's fairly common to have some non-sophomores on campus, but usually they are not taking classes. They're generally around for other reasons. Some places (like the Tucker Foundation) take leave term interns.

It has been soooo cold up here, and I'm taking two seminars and a history class this term. so no midterms thankfully, but plenty of paper writing! :( But I am so glad to be back! I just love it here. It's strange because I feel like coming back from the fall I hardly know anyone! I'm just starting to get to know the 08s now.

Hi Athena,

I am glad that you are happy to be back and are falling into your routine. Ispoke with my daughter yesterday ans she actually said you had some good weather, in the 20's (almost a heat wave)

Stay warm, Take care

Everyone gets off school on Friday for the holiday and gets free skiing at the Dartmouth Skiway

there is a ski race thing for the ski team, lots of parties, lots of snowsculptures everywhere.

The signiture event use to be the keg jump where kids use to get on ice skates and jump over an increasing number of kegs. This was ended a two or three years ago due to safety concerns/insurance.

My parents, both dartmouth alums, speak of Winter Carnival highly, practically with tears in their eyes. Whatever goes on, it must have been great. At least, it must have been great 25 years ago.
