Don’t get a North Face or Spyder jacket. The only kids wearing those are the ones who just caught on that they were cool two years ago. Get a soft shell or down coat from either Patagonia or ArcTeryx. They are a bit more than the North Face, but they are far better jackets. You could destroy something from Patagonia that you bought 10 years earlier and they would still replace it no questions asked.
Also, as some other posters have mentioned, get a pea coat or something a bit dressier/formal than a north face/patagonia/arcteryx jacket.
Good snow boots, I wear Vasque. Amazing boots, will easily last you all four years. I’m not sure about the styles for girls, but I really like mine. Again, kind of pricey (I think mine were $225) but they will last forever.

“Don’t get a North Face or Spyder jacket. The only kids wearing those are the ones who just caught on that they were cool two years ago.”

Why does that matter?? North Face is an excellent brand of outdoors wear.

I live in what is Upstate NY to everyone but the people ACTUALLY in Upstate NY.
But I agree with the person who said it’s been a freakishly cold summer. We’ve had to wear sweatshirts a few nights.

But my experience, you want, if you can afford (I haven’t grown in 6 years so this stuff is accumulated over that time):
A leather jacket, for most days will work (where I live. I don’t know about Rochester) with a hoodie underneath.
Hoodies
A warm snow jacket. I have a black Columbia jacket for the coldest days (Usually above 0 here, but not always.)
Hoodies.
I haven’t worn snow or rain boots in years. Just make sure you have multiple pairs of sneakers in case one or two get soaked. I wear skateboarding shoes all the time (Vans, DC, NOT Converse or slip-ons in the winter) and my feet rarely get too wet.
Higher socks, not just the ones that cut off below the ankle.
NO UGGS. There’s nothing good about them, and people might mock you.
Multiple pairs of glove. A thick snow pair, at least one leather pair, and a few cheap pairs (the non-water proof ones that are about $2)
Jeans and long pajama pants. For really cold days put the pajama pants under the jeans.
More hoodies.
A scarf, a hat is not necessary if you always have a hood, unless there’s a storm or something going on.
I’ll remember more later.

I’m from NY and rainboots are absolutely necessary! In NYC, the streets and sidewalks fill with puddles when it rains, and rushing cars constantly splash people with water. I’ve worn sneakers in the rain that get soaked through - it’s hard to avoid puddles when you have to walk everywhere and it’s dark out. There’s nothing worse than having your feet soaked in freezing water in the winter because you wore sneakers (which suck in the rain). So get a good pair of rainboots! Snowboots are great, if you only have leather/suede boots, just wear rainboots in the snow with warm socks underneath - I see lots of people doing this around college.

It gets really hot here in the summer…it’s been 80 degrees lately! Ugh it’s like we’re living in Florida or someplace =/
My college is icily AC’d so I have to layer my clothes (hot outside, freezing inside).

I’m also going to Flagstaff for college, and I was wondering if any of you know where to buy cute winter clothes, stylish ones but not like at a designer price haha!

D was not sure what the styles of winter wear would be, so she waited until she got to school, then got advice from the northern natives and ordered on-line.

She loved her EMU fur lined rain boots, although one is unfortunately at the bottom of the CT river now. She did get some UGGS, but as another poster said, never wear them unless it is dry out. You can get waterproofing spray for them as well, they will last longer.

ginab - Where do you live? I’m from Upstate NY as well.

Anyway,

The number one rule about winter clothing is layers are your friends!

Tank tops can go under t-shirts which can go under hoodies which can go under jackets. Socks can be doubled up and you can wear leggings under jeans.

I’m going to disagree about suede boots. They’re my favorite actually. Always much cuter, still quite warm, and easily waterproofed. If you waterproof them, you’ll get a decent wear time even with a cheap pair. I have Bear Paws (Ugg alternative) and they’ve worked out great for me.

For jackets, leather is wonderful, especially suede because as with boots, cuter, warm, and easily waterproofed. But there will be days when you want a regular jacket. Spyder ones are great, so are North Face and Columbia. Any of those 3 would be what I suggest.

For winter I have a North Face coat and North Face jacket that’s all I need for my top. Gonna need shoes for the winter though…can’t be wearing/ruining my Aldo black leather loafers in the rain and snow.

Oh, the skateboarding shoes could be why my feet rarely get wet in the winter. I always make sure to pick something in black, because white sneakers will look nasty after winter in NY. I guess because they don’t have the mesh for aerating, they’re more waterproof than your generic athletic shoe.

Hey montegut sleep in what you feel rigth in. Just keep in mind that alot ot schools have fire alarms in the middle of the nigth, so also wear something that is going to be ok to go outside…
