How cold does it get? Does it get cold enough where a sweatshirt isn't enough to keep warm? The thing is, I don't have many winter clothes besides jeans, sweatshirts, and some thin long-sleeved shirts--will that be enough? Also, besides when it rains, is it possible to wear flip flops year around?

Sorry for all the questions..just don't know much about North Cal weather.

It doesn't get too cold in winter, 40s mostly. Too cold for a sweatshirt, not cold enough for a real winter coat. shirt + sweater + windbreaker is enough in winter. Not quite cold enough for gloves. Those who wear gloves in Northern California are wimps.

I've seen flip-flops when it rains. In fact, I think I've worn them. I'd say generally don't do that. On many a day I wore a snowboarding jacket which kept me warm and was oh so good at repelling rain, but that was more than most people wore, a medium jacket or sweatshirt. I'm not positive, but I would say it can at some times drop to as low as the 40s at night, the lowest ever being 24 degrees (this does not happen nearly ever). Expect weather that is in the mid 50s to the 60s in the winter, I think.

People say "Nor Cal" and not "North Cal," but they do say Northern California(although the San Francisco bay area is actually just barely above the middle of the state if divided by a horizontal line in the middle of the vertical plane). shrug

...I wore flip flops almost all year long. Not the smartest thing in the world, especially when it was raining almost everyday in March, but I love my flip flops I guess. I'm from SoCal originally so I didn't own any "winter" clothes besides what you described, and I was fine. Double up on long-sleeved shirts, pull on a hoodie, and you should be all right.

I think a medium jacket, umbrella, and waterproof shoes are the best combination for winter weather. I personally don't think it gets very cold, but I tend to feel comfortable in colder weather, so you may prefer heavier clothing. You'll see people in shorts, t-shirts, and sandals on the coldest, wettest days, though, so it's really a subjective thing. Generally, the coldness isn't bad, it's the wetness that sucks, so try to stay dry rather than warm.

It's always hot in California, even in winter...man I hate it. It only rains and it's not really that cold, however it can get windy. So just bring an umbrella. I wish it actually snowed like back home.

Boy, I wouldn't mind some cold winter right about now. I'm marooned here on campus for the summer, and we're experiencing some of the hottest temperatures on record. It peaked at 96 degrees the other day, and it's not getting much better.

Normally Berkeley has really mellow weather, but 2006 has been a doozy. First it rains for 21 straight days in March, now it's like we're in Fresno over the summer. Go figure.

the winters in berkeley aren't cold at all! you'd be insane to wear a snow jacket or gloves and all that stuff.. its only really cold in the mornings and at night...but you can totally survive with a sweater and raincoat or something...

lol and if you really love flip flops, then its doable unless its a rain storm

but are the dorms and everything air-conditioned?

In the mini-suites, there was central air, but no room could control it.. In both the mini-suites and in the high rise buildings, each room had its own heater which it could control. I'm not sure about Foothill or Clark Kerr.

Snow jackets (at least, the kind I am thinking about) work great at keeping the rain off and keeping you warm, and while in many cases it is somewhat excessive, it often works perfectly for keeping dry and keeping warm. Gloves were nice on a few days, but really are excessive unless you get cold very easily or hate rain a lot. I agree, though, that it's enough to have a raincoat or a sweater.

Clark Kerr has no air and some of the rooms are really hot. Last year my heater was broken so it was on all the time so we always had our window open, but that wasnt enough. I brought a fan so if i get hot i can just turn it on.

Winters in Berkeley... ha. I just can't wait to get out of New England for a winter... I remember driving with the windows down in the high-30s one weekend because that was considered "warm."

Winter? I live in San Jose so I easily know Berkeley cold. It's nothing. Unless you come from SoCal in which case it'll take you a week before you are like me. I go with shorts till about November, pants/jeans till January and than for a month maybe a jacket (atleast I've been doing so the past few years since I always tend to get sick at this time).

But the summer.... Argh it's almost 110 here. I can't ****ing stand it!
