winter internship housing nyc?

son needs sublet or college dorm in lower manhatten
for wall street area internship
jan thru end of march 07

any suggestions

Find a place in Hoboken/Jersey City and commute.

congrats to your S' wall st should be an amazing opportunity

Housing in the winter is tough. During the summer, lots of interns are housed in Columbia or NYU dorms. You can give this outfit a try:

http://www.studenthousing.org/theresidences.html

Maybe one of the Brooklyn locations would work. You can see from the map how close that is to Wall Street. I do NOT have any direct experience with this organization, though. I think it is for-profit and may be expensive. You could also try craig's list new york. Also, are you sure the company your son is interning for doesn't supply housing or at least some leads? Many large companies have bulletin boards. Maybe someone could post a message for him.

Another option would be the 92nd Street Y. It's a bit uptown from Wall Street, but he can take the subway like the rest of us! It's a decent place to stay, and the neighborhood is great. http://www.92y.org/content/de_hirsch_residence.asp

Best of luck to your son!

All of the big firms will help you find housing and may even subsidize. Otherwise, check Craig's list.

One of D's friends used Educational Housing Services, when he first came to NYC as cited by LurkNess in the above post. They are reputable and safe, not cheap though(but nothing in NYC will be).As far as I know they dont offer just a "winter term" lease but it wouldnt hurt to give them a call. Using Craigs List from out of town could be a pain, and questionable if you cant see locations in person..at least you would know these locales are safe, clean and populated by other students.

thanks all for prompt replies
hoboken would be great if long term but we are from florida
and he will love being in manhatten after work for theater, restaurants
sports etc
ehs has a great website but says no part time of semester ..but will email
if any exceptions
92 y web site not responding yesterday and today?

any other college dorms pace..cooper union etc that may let interns
keep those suggestions flowing thanks

Isaac, have you been calling? I think sometimes that's better than e-mail. I think the Y might be more flexible. I agree that it would be fun for your son to live in Manhattan!

I just called up the Y website. It worked fine: http://www.92y.org

As far as other colleges: Everyone here has a space problem. That's why it's easier to find internship housing in the summer, when all the out-of-town students head for home. But maybe someone will know something that I don't! :)

Try craigslist.com for manhattan

craigslist will have all of the students that are away for break that need to sublet. the odds are quite good you will find something

Isaac, my S lives in Manhattan. Juilliard notified him in late July that he would not have a dorm room this fall. We were in the middle of an international move. He ended up finding a place on Craigslist. There were a number of listing I remember looking for temporary places, too. People getting married, and needing someone to finish out their lease, etc. But, we combed that list frequently, and sent many emails. He actually ended up getting a place just a week before he moved there. Apparently this is completely usual - to not have a place till the last minute.

We specifically looked at no-fee and by owner. The fees can be exhorbitant. The application process was ridiculous, too -- we had to send everything from tax returns to bank statements.

Don't know if you're of a Christian persuasion -- Redeemer Presby also has ads: http://www.redeemer.com/#Begin

We also tried the Y. They never answered our emails. Their website says something like $60 per day, and that was more than we were willing to pay.

When I lived in NYC in 1969 for a college internship, I started out at a Salvation Army residence in the West Village. It was only for women, but there might be something like that for men. It was like a dorm room with a bathroom and breakfast and dinner included. I had a roommate; fortunately I liked her. I later moved in with other interns from my college, but this place was great. It gave me a home away from home. I'm not overly religious, but the SA does some great stuff, though we don't like their stance on sexual orientation issues.

The Parkside Evangeline Residence is an all-female dorm (SA) located on beautiful Gramercy Park. I don't know of anything comparable for men, but if you call Parkside, someone there have a suggestion:

checking out craigslist ..boy dont leave out that plural s in craigslist you end up in ..well just dont

thanks for all the other suggestions...

I'm sorry - I didn't mean to make a post on this thread.

Your S can also compose his own posting for Craigslist.com. It's free.
First, read other postings to see the style, length, and so on.
Put it under "housing wanted" but use the word "temporary" in the title.

Look under "temporary sublet" "rooms to share" for numerous listings by others offering place to rent. Is there anyone already in the city to represent him and look the places over?

Ask at the Wall Street firm to post his notice up on their bulletin boards, cafeteria, mailroom, etc. He has to write the notice and email it to someone in the firm, of course.
