Winter Internships

I know there are a lot for the summer...but I am looking to do something useful for the winter--particularly an internship because I need to make some money to help my family out as well. Where can I find them (medical related please)?

There is no central source for the kind of thing you’re looking for. Your best opportunity will be through your college. Depending on your award package and the college you attend you may be able to find a work-study job in a bio research lab.

Both my Ds had paid (non work-study) assistantships at their respective Unis. D1 started out as a paid RA in the summer and the position continued part-time through the next school year. D2 started out a lab volunteer for a year, then moved into a paid position in the same lab for the next 2 years.

Hospital positions typically will not pay you unless you’re have some unique skill they need–like medical scribe, CNA or insurance coding. (Or your uni offers work-study at its associated hospital.)

The easiest ones to get into are at your college. D. had Med. Research lab internship for 3 years. It is usually not paid. She also had an awesome campus job for 3 years. If you are expecting to help your family financilly, though, it is NOT going to happen. At this level even a great job will be pocket change money. However, job is a very valuable experience, do not turn down any, no matter how little it pays. D. was an SI for Chem. prof. at about min. wage. Because of that job, her communication skills improved dramatically, she got very confident explaining concepts to a very large group (sometime her sessions had 40 kids), was recognized at graduation, received another great LOR, did not have to prepare Gen. Chem. for MCAT. Job is always a plus, but ability to help your family financially is beyond you at this point.
All D’s ECs, medically related and otherwise, she obtained during her school year at her college. She did very little in her summers, simply was not there for her.
