Winter long weekend at your boarding school?

Our boarding school has a long weekend coming up, and while kids are not required to leave campus most seem to be going home or elsewhere. It snuck up on me and I have to say I am surprised, we did seem to get covid under control on campus and numbers are taking a nose dive locally as well but a lot of students do not live locally and are going to places where numbers are still surging so it seems to be opening a can of worms with regards to return. Are all the other boarding school also having a long weekend in the next 2-3 weeks?

Yes, I believe most are, and I completely agree with you. It’s really frustrating for so many reasons. Loomis long weekend is Feb 3-7 and all students are required to leave campus. Here we go again…

A Lawrenceville “long weekend” is two days, so there won’t be much going on—they also let students stay on-campus. Most people who go home regularly live within 1-3 hours, and the numbers in said region are pretty low, so I don’t think it’ll be too much of a problem. Lville has also been letting students go off-campus in general (not to mention its 30% day students) and hasn’t seen a particularly bad surge anytime recently, so I’m not concerned.

Kent cancelled their long weekend but I think some kids are still leaving if they had plans already. But they wanted to avoid the whole school leaving and coming back. Not sure how many are actually going off campus-I know they’re having a lot of on campus programming.

My son’s boarding school let us know last week that everyone will have to go home over spring break in March. I think the dorm staff is burnt out. They have been allowing kids to stay on campus for breaks for the past year and half.

My kiddo is getting the knee checked out……if not allowed to leave campus due to the spike in cases this week, I am calling the Development office and making a deal for kiddo to stay at their house

Mercersburg is encouraging kids to stay on campus to avoid possible exposure in our very high-positivity surrounding areas. A good number of kids are staying, and there is a full slate of activities being hosted by SAC Fri-Tuesday. Unfortunately the MAPL contests scheduled for Saturday were canceled just last night , not due to covid but because of the impending snow that our brethren schools to the east will be experiencing more than we will. Kids who are leaving will welcome the break and the time to decompress, but by no means will campus be empty.

So far it is still going on as planned next week, but after a huge spike in cases this week, I think it should be canceled. Staying on campus was made an option with approval.

Another Mercersburg family here.
I was actually kind of surprised that long weekend was still allowed. We all had covid over Christmas, so I felt comfortable allowing my daughter to fly home to celebrate her sweet 16 this weekend. But otherwise, honestly I would have told her to stay at school. My second daughter is doing a school ski trip (she also had covid over Christmas), which I thought might be cancelled, but apparently not! They are on the long drive to New Hampshire for some seriously snowy snowboarding as I type!
