My mom got a really good premade pulled chicken packet at either Costco or Sam’s (can’t remember which). Used 3 to feed 24 so one pack would be enough for 8. Sorry I don’t have more details…
I’m Jewish. I eat pork. Plenty of Jewish people eat pork. Kosher Jews (at this point a small percentage) don’t eat pork, but they wouldn’t eat chicken or any other meat unless it was kosher either (various rules around what makes meat kosher, but it must be marked and isn’t usually available in a grocery store in an area that does not have a good number of Jews). And there are other restrictions that would apply such as not mixing milk and meat, plates and utensils, etc. so my guess is that they would let you know if they were kosher or not.
Actually, I just remembered - the last time we were together the host served pork loin, and everyone ate and was happy. So, that’s something to consider. Pulled pork is so easy, and I would cheat and buy potato salad from a barbecue place near us. Coleslaw is easy.
I have another week to think about this…
Isn’t it nuts how much we often labor in mind and action over one meal?! I sometimes think that a combo of stuff you prepare and stuff you can buy prepared is the right choice.
My husband just asked me to make this classic for dinner this week.
I’m Jewish and don’t eat pork or shellfish, but don’t keep kosher otherwise. So it’s not a given that not eating pork products indicates strict kosher habits. It’s partly how I’ve always eaten and partly a memorial to my dad. But it sounds like these guests are OK with it. It’s a nice religion that everyone can choose their level of observance.
I would not serve pork if I knew any of my guests were Jewish, unless I already knew. I know many eat pork, but many don’t.
I was recently at a lunch and we had a baked potato bar with a salad. Everyone really enjoyed it.
OP here - I believe the decision has been made.
We’re having tortilla soup and spicy chicken wraps. (They both have chicken so a little odd, but it will be fine).
Other people are bringing SW salad, appetizers and dessert.
I was still thinking but people wanted to know what to bring, so I had to “call it.”
Sounds delicious! Warm for the season but not too heavy! With soup I like to give people the option to have a cup or a bowl - just like a restaurant! Nice way for someone to choose their portions!
Yum. I think I’ll make tortilla soup tonight -
