Hey, I got accepted to Warren for biochemistry for the winter quarter. I've always wanted to go to UCSD, but then again, I was really excited about the first day of college and moving in with everyone. I'm also scared that when I come in the winter, everyone will already know each other and be settled and I'll feel somewhat akward. What do you guys think I should do?

hello! i got accepted to warren for the winter quarter too.

i totally understand how you feel =) yes, cons are no guaranteed on-campus housing + we start later than everyone else...hm but if you really want to go to UCSD going has benefits in the long run. and i'm sure that as that awkward time of period passes, it will be ok, as you're bound to meet a lot of people and make new friends.

anyways, it's up to you. as long as you make the most of where you go, it's all good. i'm still thinking about it too...not an easy decision. good luck! =)

Does UCSD have any fall programs for winter admits? My S was admitted to UCB last year as a Spring admit, and they have a Fall Freshman program through the Extension program. By enrolling in that program, you can get oncampus housing, so he has been in the dorms since the Fall.

good luck!

yeah, I got in as a winter quarter admit as well and I was hoping that ucsd would have an extension program so that i wouldn't be behind. is there a way we can find out?

thanks for the response missj and avoidingwork!

kitkat135- ucsd does have an extension program. i'll try to find the link again. but the only thing i'm concerned about is housing.

yeah, I'm concerned about housing as well. hopefully their extension program is like berkeley's where housing is guaranteed, but i doubt it. everything will work out though, don't worry :)

the site for the extension is www.extension.ucsd.edu. i'm sure you're right about everything working out :)

is anyone planning on attending admit day?

i'm going to admit day! it's on the 9th right?

i was thinking of writing an appeal asking if they would reconsider me for the fall quarter. maybe it might work, it's worth a shot. do any of you know how i would go about doing that? i'm still thinking of possibilities for housing.

my counselor called the housing department for me and they said that winter admits will more than likely get housing and on the slight chance that you don't, the off campus housing department will help you find housing with other winter admits.

for the appeal, you'd have to get two recommendations and write an essay on circumstances why you feel you should get in.

great, i was just gonna ask my counselor about housing. do we get housing starting in the winter, or in the fall? oh, and for the appeal, do i still need recommendations even though i got in already? Thanks for your help lana_h408.

no problem, glad help! we would get housing in the winter. the lady that we talked to said to be sure to send in our housing papers right at 8:00 AM on may 9th, so that we don't end up at the bottom of the waitlist. oh, about the appeal, i have no idea, my friend is appealing her decision and told me about the two rec. letters. though i would think that since you're already admitted, you'd have to do less. sorry i'm not of much help on this subject. and yup, admit day is on the 9th!

okay cool. can we send them in before may 9th?

hey kitkat135, good luck on the appeal!! hm i'm not sure about your case, but i heard that people who got rejected to insert college name here will ask someone who was accepted to that college but isn't going to attend to help write them a letter.

aw i can't make admit day. could you post any helpful info you've learned after you go? :) thank ya!

if i learn any new info from anywhere/anyone, i'll be sure to update you guys! i'm glad we can all get through this together :)

Winter Quarter, Revelle, Human Biology...

How easy is it to get into the UCSD Extension program? Do I just fill out paperwork and am in? With the exception of the housing situation, will it be essentially the same thing? Or are classes more expensive? Can someone provide more information. Where ever I go for college, I am not going to be doing on-campus housing and I will be looking for an apartment, so I could care less for housing.

When I called the admission office they told me that as winter admits you don't get first priority to sign up for the extension program classes. Instead, you should count on going to the nearby community college which is Mesa. I don't know, but who actually takes those extension programs besides us?

Last year my S was accepted on appeal to Muir college. They let him know that he got in 1 day after the housing deadline and therefore he was not guaranteed housing. This caused us so much anxiety. He was put on the waiting list and did not find out that he had housing until 1 week before school started. I was on constantly on the phone w/ housing from May thru September, and I'm sure I drove them nuts.

Remember that there are always other options for off-campus housing. The housing office puts out a contact list w/ other people on the waitlist, so use the list to find potential roommates.

Here's what I learned from experience
- Get on the wait list as soon as it opens up. Last year there was not a timestamp on the date that you signed up. The tie-breaker was your SIR date.
- The waitlist is divided in to 2 categories - the specific college waitlist and an overall general waitlist. For example, if Warren has room they will pull from their own waitlist. Once they exhaust their list and they have openings, they will pull in someone from the general waitlist.
- It seemed like most people did get housing, but not necessarily by the first day of school. If you really want to live in a dorm, don't make a long term commitment for an apartment. Find somewhere that you can temporarily bunk until housing opens up. Make connections w/ other people on the waitlist. We were going to put up my S temporarily at Residence Inn w/ another person on the waitlist. Both of them ended up getting housing a week before school started so we lucked out.
- You are not guaranteed second year housing like the other students. You can appeal housing although it's not easy to have the appeals granted.

My S had housing at ERC even though he is in Muir. Next year he has to go back to Muir for housing. Bad thing is that he doesn't know people there and doesn't know who to select as roommates. Most of his friends are at ERC.

Good Luck everyone!

A proposal for an agreement amongst the Winter Quarter admits (to Warren, for me at least):

Want to be mutual friends in case we don't know anybody?

Does anyone know of a way to get into fall quarter? I wrote to them but they haven't responded. I really want to go for fall quarter. Don't you think with all the people that are going to other colleges, they could make room for us?
