Started search for D2. She is not sure about going so north but Bowdoin fits some things she is looking for. How is the winter and what activities are there? She loves to ski, loves outdoor activities. She also kayaks/surfs (I know, no surfing in Maine!) but loves the water. Is spring and fall so short that she will only be able to enjoy winter activities in Maine? We are from NY. Also, what is the closest airport to get her home to NYC? Thanks. I think she is leaning toward biology/environmental science.

The closest airport is in Portland - it's about 30 minutes away . .

Apparently, there IS surfing in Maine! Our tour guide at Bowdoin told us about it. There's an article in The Bowdoin Orient, February '08 about winter surfing. Also, seems the Outing Club offers a surfing preorientation trip.

As chesire2 said there is surfing in Maine. there is a pre-orientation surfing trip and when i was in Maine traveling up and down the coast i saw quite a few surf shops and people surfing in the fall.
in terms of snow sports/winter sports Bowdoin is a very good place to be. sugarloaf which is one of the best ski resorts on the east coast is about 2 hours i think maybe a bit less. and there is tons of winter hiking, snow shoeing, and xcountry skiing
but at the same time i have read that being close to the ocean keeps the temperature in check and it never gets as bad as vermont and inland maine.

Great, ........surfing in Maine! Who would have thought! Love cc, world of information. Will let her know. Thanks for the information.

We have a weekend place in Old Orchard Beach and our neighbors surf right in front of the condo. I don't think that it is California quality surfing but they do surf.

I am currently writing from 1 mile from Sunday River and D is on the mountain ski coaching.

Part of why she is applying to both Bowdoin and Bates is due to their dual mountain and ocean recreational options.

Also, I know that the outdoor clubs are very popular at both schools. A lot of options should be available.

What about eating lobster & ice fishing?

with the lobster economy in the tank(no pun intended), consider everyday an all you can eat lobster buffet. i live at the head of a coastal peninsula and 80% of my classmates are lobstermen/women - they're really feeling the recession with prices around $2/lb
