Winterwear Suggestions?

Hi,

I'm from India so the weather here is really warm throughout the year.

I'm going to be in Michigan this fall, so what would you suggest as winterwear?

Like what boots, coats etc will I need?

If someone can give me a specific brand and/or a link to buy it online I'd be really greatful.

Thanks again!

As many clothes as you can comfortably put on your body.

And yes, boots.

Many folks wait until they arrive at campus to see what others are wearing so they don’t get lots of unfashionable clothing. Are you male or female?

Uggs are popular for females in the Midwest, and keep feet warm. Washable wool Icebreakers provide a lot of warmth without much bulk, but don’t know how popular they are on campus.

@entenduintransit,

Thanks, are there any specific type of boots I should buy?

@HImom,

I’m a male. That’s what I was going to do, but since there are people who are already in Michigan, I’m guessing they know what is fashionable and what is not!

Thanks a lot!

Get the classic Timberland boots. They’re comfortable, go with most styles, and very reliable. Most guys on campus, including me, wear them. They’re the best since you can wear them not only in the winter with snow on the ground, but in the spring when it rains non-stop. There’s no point in getting 100% snow boots when you’re gonna need something for the rain too.

i’d recommend looking at patagonia products too. they’re expensive, but definitely high quality.

I moved from Texas to Ann Arbor many years ago. So I also went through the big climate change. You do need a pair of snow boots occasionally. It does snow a few times a year that you may need to wear them, however, they usually plow the street very efficiently that you may not need one. You need a pair of shoes with good traction though as ice is more a problem than snow. As for winter clothing, you should get them here in town. It is not very expensive if you get them at some local stores such as Meijer or Target. The best bet is to get something with detachable layers so you have the flexibility to adjust for different weather. I do see Northface very common on campus.

Boots that can handle snow/slush.

A winter coat

Gloves

Those are the main 3 things you should purchase. Like others have said, I would wait until you get here to buy them.

You might want to also buy some long sleeve t-shirts and hoodies.

I came from a warm weather clime as well. Here are my tips

Wait to buy them in Ann Arbor (or online when you get to AA). Save yourself all the luggage. Store them in AA during summer breaks.

Layering is key - thermals, fleece inner jacket, rainproof/windproof outer jacket, a beanie and some gloves (moosejaw.com is a store in town and they have a great online presence)

Waterproof shoes or boots and warm socks

Arcteryx is the brand you want. Kind of expensive, but excellent quality and many UM students wear it. I’d recommend anything they sell, particularly their coats.

Wow, thanks for all these responses guys, I just bookmarked this thread to read before I leave!

I don’t mind spending a bit extra, because I don’t want to skimp on essentials. Also is Columbia popular and/or a reliable brand?

You may be my favorite type of people on campus. The group that’s in full winter coats by October lol

Just don’t get Northface.

Go to Cabela’s in Dundee when you get here and you’ll find everything you need

I know firsthand that Columbia stands behind its products. I bought a jacket about 10 years ago and it started shedding the waterproof lining. I called Columbia’s toll-free number to figure out how to repair. They told me the jacket was over 10 years old but mail it to them and I could pick out a free new replacement jacket. The new one I picked out is even warmer than the one I’m replacing and I love it.

I bought one with a reflective radiant inner lining that keeps heat in with less bulk. I believe it’s exclusive to Columbia. The jacket also allows you to zip out the lining and remove the hood if desired. I love it! They really mean it when they say free lifetime warranty. Have enjoyed my other Columbia fleece gear. I hate being cold and pack a lot of layers for travel.

Washable thermals also are a lifesaver. They don’t add bulk while keeping you warm, so you don’t look puffy and feel unable to move. My BIL and sis went to Ann Arbor. BIL loves LLBean, which also has great lifetime return policy and some great sales.

Moosejaw is a wonderful store in town right on State. St. across from campus. They can give you all kinds of advice on how to stay warm during the colder months.

Moosejaw is on main. Bivouac is on state but yeah either will have what you’re looking for.
