I’m mostly asking this out of curiosity, how good is penn’s internet service? is wireless widespread around campus and is it reliable? how is the wired serivce in the dorms?

It is pretty good. No bandwidth limits like some other schools. Most of the major buildings have wireless, and they expanding it to all college houses for the fall.

It's extremely fast. I've downloaded at 1MB a second, though it's usually around 800kbps.

Zoom zoom zoom

Most all of the academic buildings are wireless, and the entire housing system will be come fall. That's really a perk because it's easy to get addicted to how fast the internet service is here. Sometimes the networks get crowded with so many people on (this was an issue in Huntsman earlier this year), but the university has added exta support and remedied the problem.

Agreed, Penn's internet service is excellent. It is extremely fast and I've never had a problem connecting to wireless networks. An added bonus is the College Houses will ALL be wireless by next Fall. One less cord!

Sorry that this may sound dumb, but do they provide internet service?

For example, AOL or something isn't necessary. Also, is it free, and if not how much does it cost?

Well, it's not exactly free because it is included in your technology fee and your college house fee and room and board. But, no, you don't have to pay a specific "internet access" fee.

^ Coverage area all over campus as you can see from the link!

There are Ethernet jacks in every room of every college house, and everyone shares whatever wicked-fast backbone (probably fiber) the university uses to connect to the 'net. And it's fast. Really fast. I regularly get 4-5Mb/s download speeds (that's 500-600kb/s, friends).

So.. how does one subscribe to using ethernet?

it's pretty much already set up for you once you meet with an ITA during orientation to get your computer set up. they'll be set up in the college houses and you just take your laptop to them (i guess they come to your room if you have a desktop) and it takes 20-30 minutes to install all the security stuff. after that, you pretty much just have to plug in and type your pennkey/password on this one site if i remember correctly.

And note that you do NOT have to bring your own ethernet cords... Penn supplies them for you!!

Granted, they're only like 5 bucks, so if you buy one it's not a big deal...

Yay! Isn't Penn awesome! Free 5 dollar cables and we only have to pay 44000 dollars in tuition and absurdly costly meal plans

wait so then...would you ever nead to have ethernet on your laptop..i mean if i just have a wireless card and take out my ethernet card...this is of course...after i get my laptop lol

i need one now for my laptop, but that's just because i'm in the quad, which doesn't have wireless yet. they're supposed to have all the college houses wireless by the time you get here in the fall. i guess if they get behind schedule on that you may need it, for a little while at least.
