Hey guys, quick question: does anybody know what the internet service is like at Virginia? Are the dorms wireless? Are a lot of places like dining halls, lawns, benches, etc. wireless?

I was admitted early decision, so now I'm wondering if it's worth it to purchase a laptop rather than a desktop.

dorms are NOT wireless. They hardwired. They do give you a 50 foot cable though, so you shouldn't have a problem with a lap top there. Honestly, the internet at UVa really blows. In you're room it maxes out at 70 kb/s, but if you go to the lounge in your dorm and hook up there its like a normal cable hookup. The lounges are wireless though, and have the same crappy 70 kb/s cap. (btw 70 is at like 4 am...usually it can slow down to like 11 or 10.)

What is wireless are all the libraries, the quads outside of old dorms atleast, all the class rooms and buildings, and some other random quads. Its nice to have a laptop to hang in the quade at old dorms when its nice out. The wireless connection every where but the dorms is fast - so i recommend if you have to download something huge, you do so that way lol. So yea, get a lap top
