wireless internet

do we have wireless internet campus wide or only in certain areas? And I heard for certain UCs u have to bring an ethernet cord for your dorm cuz theres no wireless connection for that, is that true?

Depends on your college. Actually, I'm pretty sure all the dorms do except for Muir's. Muir's requires an ethernet cable. Otherwise, I'm pretty sure there's wireless campus-wide.

i didn't know there was wireless internet in the dorms. so i don't need to bring an ethernet cable then?

Can't we just set up a wireless router in muir?

:] I'm just going to hope someone else sets up a wireless router in our suite/floor/house, and I can leech off of it. >D

We'll I got a wireless router that i'll gladly set up. I'm in D House (8th floor)... The router has 400ft range. You do the math :)

CHEER! :> I would assume F-house is in range?

Yessss wireless for D house, you're the man Liux

I'm only 4 floors under you, so leech leech leech.

Yeah people bring wireless routers and stuff, but the only problem I saw with that was that if so many people leeched off of it, it would get slow and unstable. And if you put a password on it, people would just think you're mean. Good thing I got shafted to Revelle dorms, though, cause we've got wireless!

Does anyone know the internet type and speed?

Pretty sure it's cable..? If you're talking about the non-wireless, that is.

im pretty sure theres wireless connection in most areas on campus. i've used my laptop in various places and was connected. you just need to type in ur ucsd email and password to access it.

so you don't need a router for the wireless internet (in warren, at least)?

Wireless all over except in muir and blake/argo which have thick concrete walls.

:)

You need to get ResNet's permission to set up a wireless.. they make sure you secure it.. so maybe set one up for your suite?

they have a map of the campus and it shows where the wireless is, but they only highlight the building. it spreads out farther than the building. and thick concrete walls don't stop wireless internet.

which is pretty much the whole campus

Which is why I got <10% connectivity when living very close to Plaza Cafe's wireless router...

We're talking layers of compressed concrete cinderblocks; wireless networks are notoriously difficult to pick up past 1 wall, so Blake and Argo present special challenges. Dense materials are terrible for wireless ;).

so if we live in argo we need an ethernet cable?
