Hi all! D was trying to set up all her software today and was following the instructions for the printer; when she gets to a certain point in the setup where she should select the printer it says there are none on the network. The wireless light is on on the printer & it’s connected to the ethernet correctly.

any suggestions? it’s hard to do tech support from a distance!
thanks!

My son had the same problem with his wireless printer as did RobD’s daughter. He finally solved it today, but the resolution was more complex than can be addressed here. If anyone encounters the same issue, feel free to PM me and I’ll see if my son can give you a hand, based on what he learned.

Could be imagining things but IIRC both Malani’s son and RobDs daughter are on same floor, same building… maybe he can wander over and help her!

the easiest way is to put a wireless router on the campus wired lan connection in the dorm. Then you can wirelessly connect your devices(laptops, printers and other wifi devices) together on your terms, not on the school’s. In addition, it will not be seen by any other user. You also can give the password to friends on the same floor so you can work or play together not going thru the campus systems.

if you hide the ssid, it will be verturally impossible to be broken in, unless you want to give it out.

^^^Exactly. We thought of this solution and still may implement it, despite fixing the problem earlier. And AL34: 1) you’re right (thanks as always for offering to be of assistance); and 2) he is going to wander over and try to help out.

Thanks to the miracle of the CC UA community, Malanai’s S did in fact go and help my D set up the printer this evening, which apparently was quite a complicated and unintuitive process. AND there were other CC offers to help which make this mama’s heart quite happy, knowing that my D is in a place with such gracious students :)

Son’s friend has a wireless printer, and I’ve heard he’s having problems. Is there an office he can go to for help, or a department he can call for help? We’re wired, so can’t help.

Montegut: UA does have a help desk, but when Malanai’s S called them they basically gave the same advice that SEA_Tide did about registering it like a game console. My D had gone through that whole process & while it registered with the network, it still wouldn’t work.

Since it sounded incredibly convoluted, I’d suggest PM’ing Malanai or myself so we can connect the kids. I think my D might be able to help someone, but Malanai’s S spent extended time on the phone with the printer support people so he is in the know.

Son is going to try to help two students in Lakeside who’ve asked for assistance, either tonight or sometime over the weekend, depending on his schedule. He has now decided to incorporate and is available for consultations outside Tuscaloosa for a flat fee of first class airfare and good southern home cooking. :)
