Wireless router/access point

Hello,

I'll be a freshmen this fall and assuming I end up in the Middle Earth area what can you recommened in regards to wireless routers or access points? I haven't seen anything regarding hotspots on campus so I was hoping to atleast get something setup so I can wander around my suite or in the general area outside with my laptop. Does anyone here have experience settings something like this up?

Thanks

There really isn't much about which wireless router you choose. Preferably I'd choose a Wireless-N one (for more range) otherwise I would not find it too difficult to set up. Make sure that you connect the port from the wall to the router through one of the LAN ports, not the WAN port like you're used to otherwise the router will not work. This helps I guess so if you choose to share your signal other computers will have to login through Cisco Clean Access as well, but it might slow down your network you you can decide if you want to share your signal or not.

I've basically set up a router (using it now) and it's great if you have a laptop since you don't always have to be near the ethernet cable. However it would be nice to actually have a cable to reach your desk if you choose like downloading larger files or need a more reliable signal.

Thanks for the information.

Going off what you said i'm looking at this router:
Newegg.com - TRENDnet TEW-631BRP IEEE 802.3/3u, IEEE 802.11b/g, IEEE802.11n Draft 300Mbps Wireless N Broadband Router - Wireless Routers

I did find a page on the UCI website that recommends against using routers and instead using a WAP device.

Does the router I posted above seem like something that would work?

what people in my hall did was they used the suite room wall ports to plug in wireless routers so they still have the room cable for themselves.

Then they shared the signal.

People last year in my hall put a router in their room. They just set it up on one of their ethernet cable wall outlets; and put a password on it and gave the password to our hall. So anyone could access it.
