A friend of mine whose daughter is a junior at another university mentioned that her daughter used a wireless router in her dorm room. Has anyone at Cornell used one, and if so, does it work well? Thanks!

Cornell has wireless called RedRover. I was recently at another university visiting my brother and prior to installing their program, I was told I could not use a router with my ethernet connection. Might hold true here as well.

I believe it is a waste of money unless you get absolutely no connection, wirelessly, in your dorm room or dorm house.

If she wants to play it smart, she should first test it. Then band with the laptop and wireless desktop users and pitch in to get a good wireless router. Ask the university first though. CIT.

I used one when I lived in the top floor of Becker and didn't get Redrover reception. It was good to use when studying in the common room and other people's rooms.

the wireless in the dorms is generally pretty good, and you wont need a router.

is there wireless in the townhouses?

Yes there is, well at least in some apparently.

in the past that red rover chart has been inacurrate...

i know cornell CIT has done some major changes and upgrades to hardware and software...so i guess we'll just find out when we get there D:

ughhh...my townhouse doesn't have it.

I hope resurgambell is right and redrover has been expanded. cornell needs to fix this dorming situation; it's completely disorganized.

What's disorganized about it? Do you not have a room for when you set foot on campus?

RedRover reception in the dorms is typically pretty bad. All dorm rooms do get a wired connection.

Do you really need a wireless connection on top of your wired connection? Most of the time the answer is no. And if you are put into a newer dorm, a wired connection will be faster than a wireless connection.

You are allowed to use your own wireless router; see ResNet Terms and Conditions

In particular, note the following:

Subscribers who use their own wireless access point, router, NAT, or similar network device are responsible for all network traffic associated with those devices. This includes network traffic which may result from other users connecting via these devices. Users should be particularly cautious of operating their own wireless access point as these devices, if unsecured, can be used by other individuals with wireless cards to access the network and generate usage charges on the connection belonging to the owner of the wireless access point. It is the responsibility of the subscriber to secure, monitor, and administer their wireless access point if they choose to operate one. Operators of a wireless access point will be held responsible for all network usage charges incurred, and may also be held liable for any misuse, including if the wireless node is accessed by other individuals.
