wireless routers

are students allowed to bring wireless routers? theres only one ethernet port provided in the dorm, housing says, and i fear that the umich wireless network is too slow and inconsistent for my usage

I’m pretty sure using your own wireless router is against the rules, but idk how strictly it’s enforced.

I stayed in Bursley last year and the wireless network was good. People were able to play online games, use xbox live, torrent, etc. w/ no problem.

oh really? thanks man, now i dont have to use $50 :)

The wireless network is fine, and they get mad if you bring a wireless router. You’ll be fine.

You aren’t supposed to, but I would see some network up here and there.

In Baits the dorms have no wireless, just the one ethernet port. (Lounges, kitchen, etc. Did have it though). I brought my own router (not the one they offer for free) and my roommate and I hooked up both if our laptops, my 360 and even his netbook sometimes and I Nvr had a speed problem. The rooms were small (obviously they’re dorm rooms) and we just ran the cables across the ceiling and sown the wall to our desks so they weren’t in the way.

It worked great. The internet is very fast at umich

They don’t get mad at all. Don’t worry about it. There are lots and lots of routers in every dorm.

Even without a router, you can check out a hub for free to give you two ethernet ports so it’s not like you’d have to share.

I don’t know about U-M’s policy regarding wireless routers in the past, but I learned recently (at undergraduate orientation) that personal wireless routers are not allowed for security purposes.

Yes, that’s the official policy and it’s been that way for at least the past 5 years. But really - they don’t actually care.

I expected as much, but am still not completely convinced- the university representatives that spoke during orientation seemed to imply that they were going to be enforcing this particular law, if you will, more strictly this year. In fact, they went on a rant on how wireless routers interfered with web supervision, which was of “utmost importance,” as piracy and other such things are not going to be tolerated.

Unless this is customary at every year’s orientations, I would see reason to feel uneasy about bringing a personal router next year.

No problem - don’t take my word for it. Once you’re on campus you’ll see how it works.

Routers do not actually impact any “supervision.” Even if they could, it doesn’t matter. Web piracy is completely rampant at Michigan (and probably all college campuses) and there’s not a damn thing the U can do about it, other than delivering these types of rants at orientation I guess. Fast connections + college students = downloading all the media under the sun. My roommate from my first two years filled up multiple tb drives.

Not that I’m recommending doing anything illegal :)

VPNs are a college student’s other best friend.
