Wisconsin (CS) vs Stevens Institute of Technology (CS)

Hello, I am an international student who got accepted to those schools as a CS major.
I got a Global Scholarship ($20000) and a Pinnacle scholarship ($5000) per year from Stevens.
For Wisconsin, nothing.
So the cost of attendance for each would be approximately $56000 for UW Madison and $49000 for Stevens.
I think Stevens is underrated in many ways, and I think NYC really appeals to me.
But UW has prime and such.
Which would be a better choice?
Thank you.

Small or gigantic school? Terrific (if bitterly cold in the winter) college town or easily go to NYC whenever?

What are some advantages of a great college town? I have never been to one.
Also, I think I prefer smaller schools, but do you think paying extra $7000 is worth for Wisconsin’s reputation over Stevens?

Reputation where? Your home country? You would know better yourself.

Steven’s is a pretty small school esp vs Wisconsin , if you want the big school sports experience, think 85,000 kids all wearing Wisconsins sweatshirt at the football game Stevens does not have that at all. Cost of living if you go off campus at Stevens will be much higher at Steven’s. Can you pay the extra 7k per year? do you live in a rural area now and a city is a big pull? a great college town offers cheap food, cheap art scene. Do you want grad school? if so save your cash for that.My guess is Stevens will have less foreign students but depending on where your from a larger population of foreign restaurants , people around the general area.

Stevens (not “Steven’s”).

@KKanzok - What is the reputation in CS that you believe Wisconsin has over that of Stevens? In my area and in my recruiting experience, it is actually the opposite. Stevens has one of the best placement rates in CS in the nation, and among the highest salaries of graduates (the thirteenth highest in the US, in fact).

In my opinion, paying that much to attend a state university is silly, especially if one can actually attend Stevens for less. Since you are an international student, unfortunately, you pay the out-of-state tuition at any public university. I advise high school students here not to attend an out of state university for this reason. In most cases, the out-of-state institution does not provide a measurable advantage over the in-state institution.

@Parent0347, depends on the state you’re in and the OOS public.

Though yes, big AAU publics will have lots of similarities.

Being a Stevens student, I might be a little biased, but I would go with Stevens. The Pinnacle Scholars program is a huge advantage. With the pinnacle passport, you will be able to make the most out of your time in NYC and attend expensive concerts, broadway shows, sports events, etc. all for free. You also get $5k every summer to go abroad or do research. I don’t know anything about Wisconsin, but I do know that its not where you want to be if you’re looking for a more urban experience.

Thank you very much, guys. I did not know that the Pinnacle Scholars Program had that many benefits. I have not still decided, but both schools are very good, and I agree that paying 55K on a public institution is kinda ridiculous. Everyone, thank you for enlightening me.

My friend studies finance and CS at Wisconsin. He loves it and says they are expanding the CS program by opening a new college entirely for CS. Madison itself has a small urban feel, which is cool. For a top 50 USNWR ranking, Wisconsin is a good price compared to any private school (18-20k/year cheaper)

FWIW I’d agree there’s no reputation difference here. Itv sounds like Stevens is the better fit, I’d go with it. Bonus points for being cheaper as well + scholarship benefits sound nice.

Stevens, awesome location and good recruitment.

@PengsPhils Hi could you please tell which is better to go for between Stevens Institute of technology for BI&A and MET Boston University ( CS + Data analytics) In terms of job opportunities and ROI. I was not able to send you a message that’s why I’m asking here. I am an International student and applied for Masters.

@dryhat021 Generally making your own thread is probably the best way. Masters generally aren’t that sensitive to school name between solid options. The bigger difference appears to be that you’re studying two entirely different things though, so I would pick the one that allows you to study what you prefer. You also didn’t include any cost details though.

@PengsPhils Thanks allot for replying. I would certainly do that from next time. However, MET would cost me around USD 87000 and Stevens will cost me somewhere around USD 58000. Besides, I am more Inclined towards MET but I am not sure about job opportunities. considering the fact, that it’s the school mainly build for working professionals. Please let me know.
