@rjkofnovi Cost was a very important factor for choosing UW over Purdue. But now It feels like UW will probably costs more than Purdue.
Figure 5% per year increase at UW. BTW UW is ranked higher than PU for Chem E which somebody conveniently left off their list.
^^^^hehe. I knew barrons would catch that one!
Again, kkedia, I think you need to gain some perspective on this. Barrons is probably correct for a ballpark figure; nobody knows exactly, as those cuts are still only proposals. Unlike in-state tuition, the state won’t determine what the OOS tuition costs are – UW will. But it will reflect an overall attempt to balance out future operating costs for the university. Historically, UW has been quite low on tuition, even for the Big Ten, and especially so considering the wealth of research and campus resources Madison offers. It is very unlikely, for example, that Wisconsin’s OOS tuition will approach that of, say, Michigan in the next four years.
By the way, rjk, have you also been jumping on the UIUC engineering threads with their impending cuts? I do believe they plan to extract more than the budget proposals for UW.
They appear to be in trouble as well anyhdrite, but Wisconsin’s plight has been more in the headlines. Politics of course. I hope that UW gets through this episode relatively unscathed. It is an excellent school.
Agreed, rjk. Time shall tell. And there have been times where I wished Wisconsin would have adopted more closely Michigan’s tuition / infrastructure model, if only to insulate W. more from outside interference. And I say this being an alum of the most expensive Big Ten institution as well.
There was a thread going for a while based on the proposal’s mission language changes (plus related issues), and the subsequent retraction within 24 hours. The thread has since petered out, not least because there has been so much resistance, reversals, etc. While ugly for the state, UW may still weather the storm OK.
*edited to add that it is an innate, and stubborn Wisconsinite trait that insists upon modesty over “elitism”; tuition rates and other practices are affected respectively. In my experience, Iowans also seem to exhibit this modesty.
@barrons Do you really feel that they can increase this much costs every year. I mean students will leave the college.
Hey you feel there will be any effect over reputation of UW and any effect over internships co ops aur jobs?
The QS World University Rankings (Britain) rank Purdue #14 in the entire world in mechanical engineering. Wisconsin didn’t even make the top 50.

But hey, Princeton Review rates Wisconsin as the #8 “Top Party School” in the USA!

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (China) rank Purdue #14 in the entire world in engineering. Wisconsin didn’t even make the top 50.

But hey, Wisconsin has a better basketball team this year!
@Defensor I finalized Purdue today. I could not take risk with tuition and fee and seeing the present scenario with Wisconsin, I went for Purdue. Thank You everyone.
Congrats kkedia! Keep in mind that Purdue has close to three thousand more international students enrolled there than WIsconsin. I guarantee the vast majority of them are in engineering. That you know so many students who attend Purdue over Wisconsin is an indicator of this fact.
Congratulations, kkedia! Rest assured that you made the correct decision. Work hard to be the best engineer you can be. Good luck!
