Anybody out there have experience with how long a trombonist can expect to be out of commission after having 3 wisdom teeth removed? DS is scheduled to have them out at the end of December, but we just found out he made the district orchestra which is performing about 9 days after the surgery. We're thinking we should try to move the surgery to the end of the school year. Thoughts?

I know a few trombonists who have been through this in the past few years, along with several other brass players. Typical recovery time seems to be between 2 weeks and 2 months depending on the person and the extent of the surgery.
Moving it to the end of the year might be a good idea.

If they run things like they do around here, that performance nine days later probably requires one or more mandatory rehearsals within a few days of the proposed surgery. If your son wants to have any chance at all of playing with the district orchestra you should ask your dentist what risks might be involved with postponing the extactions.

DS (a trumpet player) had his wisdom teeth pulled on December 22 of his freshman year. He played in a concert on January 10. BUT he could not pick up his trumpet for a full week (until the stitches were removed) and he really couldn't practice for about 2 weeks. It was uncomfortable. If your son is not having any pressing issues with his teeth, postponing would probably be a good idea. I should add,we wanted to have DS's wisdom teeth pulled BEFORE he left for college, but with auditions, festivals, concerts, Tanglewood in the summer, and seating auditions at the start of school, there wasn't enough recovery time to do so. Thus the December appointment.

S, horn player, was due to get one out on Dec 22. Called me Thursday night to see if he could change it to after Christmas - got a gig Christmas eve that pays $850, and didn't want to turn it down! He's now scheduled for Dec 26. Has requested to have the month of Jan off from orchestra requirements at school. Hope that's enough, but it's only one tooth.....
