Alright, so I am getting my wisdom teeth out tomorrow morning and I have no idea what to expect. I've had one (1!) surgery in my life so far and it was nowhere near my face.

Are there any tips that anybody out there can give me for healing up after the surgery/general advice?

And, just for poops and giggles, have YOU gotten your wisdom teeth out yet or not?

My friend had a swollen face for more then a week

Have fun :D

Yea, I know, I’ve seen the aftermath of wisdom teeth surgery. It makes you look like a fish.

Also, ugh, the last time I tried the painkillers they gave me for surgery, I woke up naked on the roof of the Empire State building…

I had mine taken out in Oct 2010. I had to eat mashed patatas for a week straight. There will be tons of bleeding so your mouth will be full of tissue-like bandages for the first 2-3 days. Combine that with food, and you have a not so delightful mealtime.

Your face will be swollen like a fish. When I got back to school on all my friends thought I had gotten beat up. There will be numbness but it goes away within 24 hrs (or never, you just never know lol).

P.S. dont get on Facebook hours after the surgery. I made that mistake, and I began writing gibberish on everyone’s statuses, so they all thought I was being stupid or abusing drugs

I got my wisdom teeth out on Monday, and it was not the worst experience of my life. The bleeding stops after about 24 hours, but you’ll probably be sleeping for most of that time anyways. Just take your painkillers, sleep a lot, and stock up on soft foods such as jell-o, ice cream, and yogurt.

@FutureVpFinance Lol dude, that’s hilarious because I was just thinking that FB wouldn’t be a very good idea. I wanna hear some of your gibberish!

Do not worry about it. My son had his wisdom teeth out last Friday. He has been doing fine without taking any strong painkillers. Although the surgeon will tell you brush your teeth, but do not do it on the first 24 hours, otherwise you will bleed a lot. First day you should drink a lot liquid and do not eat anything you have to chew. In the next few days try soft food such as bread, vegetable and bean soup, and hot dog. Do not eat rice or spaghetti which will get into the “holes” (yes big holes) and difficult to get it out. After 24 hours, carefully rinse your mouth many times to get food out of the holes after each meal.
Good luck!!

I got mine out the Thursday before last Thursday. It still hurts. Obviously not as bad as the first three to four days but it still sucks. so when I came out of the office my whole mouth jaw area was numbed so I couldn’t really move or control it they said it would wear off in about four hours but they also said to take my pain medication an hour before it wears off because it takes a while to start working BUT you have to take it with food (or else you throw up which I couldn’t even imagine doing at that point it sounds ridiculously miserable like wouldn’t it infect you freshly open wounds?) unfortunately since your mouth is numbed you can’t control your tongue so when you try to eat everything just falls out. So I’m sitting there trying to eat applesauce making a mess so I can take my effing pain medication. it was terrible but I did watch the whole first season of community and four seasons of the hills.

^^^same thing with me, but with mashed potatoes instead of applesauce, while my dad struggled to spoon feed me chocolate milk (epic fail lol) Oh yeah, and I dont remember the ride home, AT ALL ( I asked my dad and he said he drove me home lol) And my dad (works at the med hospital where it happened) got some type of nasty saltwater type mouthwash so I wouldnt have to brush and risk bleeding to death. I had to take it after every meal.

Oh! and ask the doc if you can keep the teeth afterwards. I have all eight teeth (4 wisdom and 4 others) in a nice little baggie and they look pretty cool (adult teeth are HUGE!!) but dont ask afterwards because you wont remember!

wikipedia says this:

You should ask if it’s possible. I would be curious to know…

OK, I chose to use novocaine instead of being asleep when they did it. They put on the TV while they were doing it and (I couldn’t tell them to change it for obvious reasons) I watched an episode of cash cab while getting the teeth removed.
It took about half an hour, and was a little (not very) painful even with the novocaine (the novocaine shots were more painful than the procedure), and very uncomfortable.
Before they even started, I vomited out food that I had eaten ~an hour earlier, so don’t eat much right before it (I didn’t even know I was getting it done that day - we went there to get preliminary x-rays and to set up an appointment, and they said “how about right now?” and I agreed).
Afterwards, it was pretty much what everyone else said, except that I remembered the whole thing exactly, including the book that I was reading (which was more psychologically painful than the procedure was physically). I was lucky, my face didn’t swell up at all. I also never had to go on the ultra strong painkillers, since it never got that bad. I ate only pudding and plain yogurt for the first day, with ice cream and some other soft foods added after that. I was numb for an hour or so after the procedure, and after that the pain was just a dull throb, nothing horrible. There was a lot of blood, and a lot of cotton in my mouth. For about a month after, I was able to feel the holes in my mouth with my tongue, and had to try my best to avoid getting food stuck in them.

argh I’m getting all four out at once. if I get it done on a Saturday morning, do you think I’ll be able to go to work Monday? I’m a camp counselor…

dont eat food AT ALL within 12 hrs. They probably wont be able to wake you up while you’re vomiting

Dang man, it sounds like it’s gonna suck. Lol

…and I just ate lol! They td me 8 hours!

I got all four out at once. It wasn’t that bad. My face didn’t swell up at all and it only hurt a little bit afterwards, something ibuprofen took care of. I could eat normally after about a week.

^ is exactly my experience. We are both lucky. Did you use novocaine, or were you asleep?

It depends on how quickly you recover. You’re probably going to miss the whole week, but it is possible that you’ll recover on time.
It is. No watering it down, it is going to suck.
Don’t worry about it. I didn’t vomit out my breakfast or lunch, only the food I just ate an hour or so before (yes, I recognized it and yes, it was disgusting).
It’s too late anyway, so just don’t eat an more and don’t worry about it.

Alright, I just drank my last glass of water for the night I think. Now, I am devising what I can do in the time while I’m couch-ridden afterwards. I guess I can watch HBO movies or IFC or something.

I don’t think I’ll be able to read. X_X

I haven’t had my wisdom teeth out yet, but I did have 4 teeth taken out in one surgery before. If that’s anything like getting wisdom teeth out, then I won’t be too scared then since I’ve already been through it once. I was put to sleep and the last thing I remembered was counting to three and I was out like a light! When I woke up, I stumbled so much, had slurred speech, and when I went to stand up I kept leaning to one side and crashed into a wall. FUN! I had holes in my gums and for some reason I had like these bubbles or skin folds developing over the holes! And they kept bleeding …

Good luck! Lol.

I actually just got all four wisdom teeth out last Friday, and it hasn’t been as bad as I expected it to be (hasn’t been incredibly painful, etc.), so you may get lucky … Although I did say some pretty crazy things when I was half-crazy on anesthesia (not that I remember any of it, ha). My whole face was numb for 15-20 hours, which made it hard to eat, and I also vomited once in the afternoon after the surgery. I’ve finally graduated to solid foods - had pasta last night without much difficulty. My face is still swollen, but I think it’s getting better by the day.

I sure as hell watched a lot of TV.
