Wisdom Teeth

So, I just got all four of my wisdom teeth out today, and I was wondering if anyone who has had theirs out could give me some advice on what to do to mimimize pain/recovery time, or just amuse me with their own stories of having them removed. Thanks!

My sister got all four out and was bedridden for 4 days. My mom was horrified. xD My sister ate nothing but pudding and her face swelled up...my brother laughed.

^_^ Good luck on the recovery!!

My friend just had his removed (plus another molar) and he had a bruise in the shape of a beard all around his jawline. He recovered quickly, though.

When do wisdom teeth usually come in? I'll be 15 in a few months and my bottom molars right before the wisdom teeth aren't even finished growing in yet...

I got my wisdom teeth out when I was 14. It was great, I spent my spring break playing GTA: San Andreas for 10 hrs/day.

I'm 16, and they told me it was early to have them removed. I'm taking advantage of the three-day weekend to watch the entire series "My So-Called Life," which I just got on DVD. I'm feeling fine (vicoden! yay!) except my mouth is bleeding like crazy.

Ugh! I hated getting mine removed. I couldn't get out of bed for about 4 days because the medicine (antibiotics plus painkillers) they gave me caused my stomach to severly turn. It also had problems eating, but that is to be expected with any type of oral sugery.

If you have problems with painkillers, only take Advil or something similar. Keep your head slightly elevated to reduce swelling, and follow the directions from your oral surgeon regarding cleansing of the incisions/removal sites. Surely, the Doctor gave you instructions as to recovery. If you will follow them, the recovery time will be much smoother. Son had it done during HS with minimal problems, other than not being able to stand the painkillers. He stayed on Advil instead. And, 30+ years ago, I had my wisdom teeth removed. Same issues as son, except for SEVERE reaction to painkillers. I found out the hard way about narcotic painkillers and pretty much edured the pain w/o medication. Best of Luck with your recovery!

I remember getting mine removed on a Saturday, and on the following Monday I forced myself to go to school. Which was a seriously bad idea since I later discovered that the pain meds my oral surgeon had put me on made me really woozy. During my algebra test the numbers were literately dancing on the paper.
xD

I just turned 18 and I have no sign of them coming in any time soon

do they only take them out if they hurt?

That's the reason they took mine out. I'm sure there are other reasons.

The reason they took mine out was because they were coming in almost horizontally since my mouth was too small to hold them. They didn't hurt though.

My friend had his out last year. They weren't properly sterilized afterward, because a few days later he developed an infected abscess in one of the [I don't know the correct surgical term for wherever the tooth was]. He went on a trip to visit some college friends over the weekend, and his face hurt, and when he got home and looked in a mirror the side of his face had swollen to the size of a baseball and hurt terribly. He was taken to the hospital, where the doctor told him he had a 50/50 chance; if a bottom molar was infected, they could drain it out. If a top molar was infected, the bacteria would drain into his brain and kill him. He spent the night in the hospital, not knowing whether he'd wake up the next morning.

He was fine, luckily, and I don't think this happens very often as I've never heard a similar story. It's just something to think about.

Um, no bad experiences here. Everything was smooth. Just do as the doctor says and don't mess with them.

My sister didn't have wisdom teeth....
I, on the other hand, did. Having already had braces and no room left over for those hunking wisdoms I had to have them removed. I swelled up like no tomorrow and had a continuous stream of diluted blood drooling from my mouth the rest of the day. The frozen pea bags and regular pain meds worked wonders. The classic chipmunk look only lasted a few days.

My dad is a dentist so he took my x-rays a few months ago, along with my brothers.

apparently my brother only had about 2 buds, and I had like 4-5 O_O

My bro got one of his taken out and he wasn't in that much pain. He was actually eating real food after a few hours. He didn't taken anything more than Advil either. I guess some people get it worse.

Nobody in my family had any problems with wisdom teeth so hopefully it's the same for me.

last dentist visit i saw the xray with my wisdom teeth under the gumline, ready to grow in...all crooked, ruining the middle school years of work in palatal expander and braces and elastics and retainers...so mine are gonna have to come out...
