WISE Program

My daughter has been accepted to many schools and is still waiting to hear from 2 more. She's hopeful that she'll get accepted into the WISE program and certainly has the GPA and test scores to do so.

My question is:

Is there anyone out there with personal experience in this program? My daughter hopes to be a doctor, or research scientist, or dentist, etc., etc......definitely a career in something health care related.

Anyone who can comment from personal experience about this program?

We've visited the school and while she liked it is more leaning to RPI (haven't heard yet but expecting an acceptance) or Binghamton. We're out of state so Stony Brook and Binghamton will definitely be more expensive than in-state but still somewhat affordable....(With lots and lots of loans that is as we won't get ANY financial aid but are hopeful for merit aid.) With a WISE acceptance I think Stony Brook might be a better choice..

I can't say enough wonderful things about the WISE program. Have you had a chance to talk with anyone there? Carrie-Ann Miller, or Doreen (her assistant), or any students? (I don't believe that any of the students who post here regularly are WISE folks.)

Contact me directly and I'll put you in touch with some WISE people.

Chris

Chris -- Thanks! I think we'll wait until she definitely gets accepted...which I'm thinking she will and then maybe we'll plan another visit.

Do you know when the acceptances come through for the WISE program?

mid-March, I think. Good luck! Where are you from?

Chris

We're from the Philadelphia suburbs. We visited this summer.

sbuadmissions -- Should my daughter submit her mid-term grades for WISE consideration. She has continued her un-blemished 4.0 unweighted GPA with classes of AP Pysch, AP Gov, AP Chem and AP Calc BC.

She's hoping to get academic money from Stony Brook and to get a WISE acceptance.

Should she forward her mid-terms....or doesn't it matter at this point?

It probably won't matter, actually... if she already is carrying a 4.0, then maintaining that is wonderful, of course, but it's not going to make a difference, I wouldn't think. It won't matter in scholarship consideration -- if she's already a 4.0, then it can't get any higher -- and same for WISE consideration.

But it's impressive! :)

Chris -- Thanks for the information!

Any updates on the WISE admissions? Stony Brook is still high on my daughter's list but pretty much dependent upon an offer to the WISE program. Are the WISE letters coming soon?

I'll check in with them in the morning.

Chris

Thank you!

Did any decisions go out yet?

I got a packet today. (I'm in state) Does anyone know how many are accepted to the WISE program?

My daughter just received her acceptance to WISE. She's more excited then I thought she would be and it's high on her list. The idea of living and going to school with other young women who love math and science is very exciting to her. We'll be planning a visit soon!

i just got my acceptance letter to WISE today too. i was just wondering how many people are accepted each year?

Congrats to all of you! I love WISE. Hope to see you all on campus!

Chris

Chris: Do you happen to know about how many people are accepted to WISE each year and/or how many people end up doing the program?

I haven't seen this year's list, but they usually admit about 200, and enroll a class of about 50.

Hello Chris,
My D has recently got accepted to Stony brook with a Provost scholarship of $7K/yr. When will we know if she is accepted to the WISE and or Honors program and is any merit scholarship awarded with these programs?
We are OOS. D has 1350 SAT (M+R) and 3.86 UW and 4.54W GPA. Ton of ECs and good essay and recs.
Thanks
