wishing i applied RD instead of ED

i need to be convinced i made the right decision here. i love wesleyan and applied ED. however, the one major part of wesleyan i dislike is its location, and that’s a really big downside for me. all my life i’ve told myself i absolutely need to be in a city and can’t stand four more years of the suburbs, and i truly still believe that. i went to new york last weekend and it only made this feeling worse. i am very confident in my app for wesleyan and truly believe i will get in. if i’d applied RD, my chances obviously would have dropped. but at least then i would’ve had the ability to consider other schools, such as NYU and barnard, before deciding on wesleyan. i’m just worried that the choice is going to be made for me and i’m gonna regret applying early. anyone feeling the same way?

You still have time to ask Wesleyan to switch from ED to RD, thus releasing you from your agreement.

@T26E4 are you sure? i’ve been looking into how to do that but i can’t find anything. i’ve only seen that you can back out of it if the financial aid package isn’t enough, and that’s only after notifications have been released. i haven’t seen any protocol for before the notification date. i’m also worried that i definitely wouldn’t get in if i asked to be switched.

If you want to try to get released from your ED application you should: 1) talk to your guidance counselor and 2) call Wesleyan admissions… quickly. If you do go that route, I would try to get the ED release in writing (email is fine) from Wes.

Are you willing to drop Wesleyan from your list?

Yes, just call/email the school and ask them to change your application to RD. This advice is pretty common here, so I’m sure it’s not that unusual. The worse that can happen is they say “no” (but I doubt it).

Yes, just call and ask to have it moved to RD. Let your GC know so you can apply to other schools as well.

Allow me to be contrarian just for balance. Questions posed with best intent:

  • Are you sure this isn't just "buyer's remorse"?
  • If you got in everywhere you apply RD which school would you choose?
  • If you got in everywhere you applied RD except Wesleyan would you be disappointed?
  • What made you pick Wes for ED in the first place? Are you willing to give up your ED1?

Good luck to you!
